Zaha Hadid Architect

Zaha was educated first at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and later at the Architectural Association in London (AA School), UK, from 1972.

Her early career as an Achitect was at OMA, then called Office for Metropolitan Architecture, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as a partner.

She taught at the Architectural Association with Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis, who both worked for OMA architects.
Zaha ran her own architecture studio at the AA until 1987. She later became Professor at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria.

Key architecture awards for ZHA include winning the Pritzker Prize Architecture Award in 2004, and the Stirling Prize in 2010 + 2011.

BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group is a famous architects office based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The concept of ‘hedonistic sustainability’ by Bjarke Ingels is nowhere more evident than his Danish waste-to-energy plant that has ski slopes on the roof. The unlikely combination of green energy and alpine sport was the winning bid in an architectural competition to design a new waste-to-energy plant which aims to be one of the cleanest in the world.

Tadao Ando Architect & Associates are based in Osaka, Japan

Tadao was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1941. He did not train as an architect, initially working as a boxer.

In 1969-70 he established his architecture practice in Osaka.

Major architecture awards won by his architectural firm include the RIBA Gold Medal in 1997, and the AIA Gold Medal in 2002.

Significant works by his architectural practice include the Chichu Art Museum, Naoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan; the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum, Naoshima; the Church of the Light in Ibaraki-shi, Osaka; and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor Architects studio is based in Haldenstein, Canton Graubunden, nr. Chur, Switzerland. The famous Swiss architect was born in 1943 in Basel, Switzerland
His architectural education was at Kunstgewerbeschule, followed by the Pratt Institute, New York City, NY, USA. Architecture Books by his design firm include ‘Atmospheres’, by Birkhauser, 2006.

Enric Miralles

Enric won a number of architecture competitions in Spain with Helio Piñon and Alberto Viaplana. The Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue – Embt Arquitectes Associats SL designed the Barcelona projects Plaça dels Paisos Catalans and Park in Besós. His architecture practice was later titled EMBT, and had a main office in Spain with a smaller studio in Germany. Benedetta Tagliabue Miralles runs the office after the death of Enric. The work of this Catalan architecture office was contemporary and expressive, very different from the Modernist architects dominant on the continent when he set up, or those in the British Hi-Tech architecture movement.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Elizabeth Diller moved from Poland to NYC as a child, whilst Richard Scofidio is from New York.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an international design firm that spans architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. The architectural practice established its identity through experimental large-scale installations, curatorial and performance projects, and works in media and print. Based in New York, the design firm is led by three partners—Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro—who work collaboratively with a team of one hundred designers, artists, and architects on the design of each project.

Sir Nicholas Grimshaw

Royal Gold Medal for Architecture 2019 Winner
UK’s highest honour for architecture is approved personally by Her Majesty The Queen, awarded for his sustained contribution to architecture in the UK and globally.
In June 2019 Grimshaw appointed Andrew Whalley to Chairman, succeeding Sir Nicholas, who founded this architecture practice in 1980.

José Rafael Moneo

This Spanish Architect won the RIBA Gold Medal 2003, and worked for architect Jorn Utzon for 2 years. He was born in 1937, in Tudela, south of Pamplona, Navarra, Spain.

Key Buildings designed by Rafael Moneo include Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, California, USA, 2002, the Town Hall in Murcia, Spain 1998, and the Museum of Roman Art, Mérida, Spain 1985.

Major architecture awards won by Moneo include the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1996, and the RIBA Gold Medal in 2003.
