Making the Museum Reinhard Ernst
The Museum Reinhard Ernst, scheduled to open in spring 2023 in the city centre of Wiesbaden, is an 8,910 sqm facility exhibiting Reinhard Ernst’s private collection of abstract art. Funded entirely by the Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation, the project is the culmination of a planning process beginning in 2010, and of the long friendship between Reinhard Ernst and Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki.

The Japan Sword Museum, Kyu Yasuda Garden, Tokyo, Japan
The Japan Sword Museum sits within a public park that once belonged to an 18th-century Samurai estate. Samurai warriors were leading patrons of swordsmiths who forged the bow-shaped, single-edged blades.
Fearing extinction of these swords after the Second World War confiscations, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords was founded in 1948 for the purpose of collecting, displaying and appraising the blades and related accoutrements.
The building footprint is based on the former Ryogoku Public Hall built in 1926: a three-story structure oriented towards the garden’s pond. The building is entered from the site’s northwest corner where angled walls welcome visitors inside.
