Claudio Silvestrin – Key Projects
Featured Building:
Victorio Miro 14 – gallery, Hoxton, east London, England, UK
Date built: 2007
Claudio Silvestrin Architect with Michael Drain Architects
The Victoria Miro Gallery is well worth a visit, located just a short walk north east from Old Street tube. The building doesn’t look welcoming but on my visits the staff have been courteous and helpful.
There is a deligthful, calm space at the back of the building where decking backs onto a restored offshoot of the Regent’s Canal. The pièce de résistance is the staircase: a powerful single slot up the south end of the building, narrow, white and clean.

If interested to know more there is a Building Study By Edwin Heathcote in the Architects Journal, dated 26 Jul 2007.
Victoria Miro first opened her gallery in Cork Street, Mayfair in 1985.
In 2000 Victoria Miro Gallery relocated to a sensitively converted, 8,000 sqft former furniture factory situated between Hoxton and Islington in northeast London.
In 2006 the gallery expanded further by opening Victoria Miro 14, a 9,000 sqft exhibition and viewing space open to the public for special exhibitions and projects.
The new space is conceived by Claudio Silvestrin Architects and executed by the project architects Michael Drain Architects.
Victoria Miro 14 sits atop a refurbished Victorian building, its sculptural, minimalist form creating a dramatic approach to the building from the street, especially from the south west, where the subtle curve overhang over the west facade announces that something intriuging is going on inside this fairly mundane looking shell.

Claudio Silvestrin – architect studio based in east London
Minimalist style designs similar to John Pawson, also based in London. The minimalist style hit the headlines in the mid-1990s and proved quite controversial with some people feeling the style didn’t suit typical family life, or that it was too puritancial.
