Alila Yangshuo is located in a col near Li River in Yangshuo, Guangxi. Surrounded by picturesque natural landscape, the site locates in one of the most typical karst regions. An old sugar mill built in 1960s is beautifully preserved, with an industrial truss used for sugar cane transport. We envision industrial heritage as the representation of spirit of older generation. This became the premise of this project. Our main design strategies include the following.

The site is flat and vast, with the endless ocean view at one side. The “height” and “distance”, consequently, becomes the key factors through the concept generating process. We set up an observatory platform on the roof of the building, where people could enjoy the maximum view of the landscape.

The layout of the courtyards is the foundation of a internal logic that informs the transition of the spaces. Sunlight reaches the interiors spaces directly or indirectly through the clerestories on the northern wall. The light made the spaces and time inseparable.

Tianjin Xiqing District County Elementary School, China

This is an elementary school building of 48 classes in a county in Tianjin. The major functions include regular classrooms, special program classrooms, cafeteria, training gymnasium, administration areas and an outdoor exercise field.

Chinese Architects

Gong Dong was invited by the architecture research media Archiposition to give a public lecture “the enlightenment of light” in Shenzhen, December 2016.

The architecture firm was listed with the other three Chinese architectural firms on the first Dezeen Hot List. This list summaries the top 400 entries includes architects, designers, brands. Institutions and events that are most newsworthy last year.

The exhibition of Sino- Australia Dialogue on Design Research organized by Andong Lu and Marcus White was held successfully from October to November 2016 in Melbourne. Gong Dong was invited to offer his concepts with the recent practice of Vector Architects, and they are exhibited via a visual essay given by the curators.

The program Dream Home of Dragon TV Shanghai broadcasted “Home on a Cliff Top” in November 2016. This is a renovation project designed by this Beijing architects office.

It’s the second time for Zhongshuge bookstore to land in Beijing. This time it joins Lafayette department store, where the classical gardens and the reading space collided from three different perspectives in the fashionable commercial area.
