Ilulissat Icefjord Centre Building
Overlooking the Kangia Icefjord on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, the building blends effortlessly into the landscape and offers a unique vantage point from which to experience the astonishing Icefjord and understand the dramatic consequences of climate change on this remarkable landscape.

Innovative Architecture, organised by the German Design Council, honour the best architecture and design solutions internationally. This year’s winners have now been announced and can set themselves clearly apart from their competitors thanks to their title. The special awards each come with EUR 10,000 in prize money:

An Icefjord Centre in Ilulissat will attract tourists to Greenland and contribute to our understanding of climate change. The Danish architectural firm Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has designed the visionary building for the centre with respect of the unique, UNESCO-protected natural surroundings.

Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has won the competition to design an extension to the existing headquarters of The Danish Society of Engineers, IDA. “The Opal” is technological advanced and a true eye catcher. It will be prominently placed in the Copenhagen Harbour.

Holmbladsgade Sports Centre
The scheme’s most pronounced feature is a large translucent membrane that stretches between the sports and culture centre arena, and the four characteristic end walls of the neighbouring public housing scheme.

Gentofte Building – Design Competition win 2004
Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter ApS won in 2004 the competition to convert Jægersborg Water Tower into a mixed-use building. On the upper floors, student housing units mark the perimeter of the existing structure. Each unit is expressed by a protruding crystal-like add-on that brings daylight into the apartment, and offers unobstructed views to the surrounding landscape.

Nicolai Cultural Center
Nicolai Cultural Centre is a conversion of 5 previous school buildings enclosing a common schoolyard. Each building represents a period in Danish school history, from the first school dating 1856 to the last built that opened in 1909. None of the buildings were no longer in use as school buildings, two were listed as cultural heritage.

The terrace houses have been built in connection with the official exhibition ‘Living 2006+’ in Ringsted. The construction consists of 7 terrace houses, placed in rows of 2 with respectively 3 and 4 housings, which stagger along a building line.

Study box
Measuring only 10 m2, Read-Nest is a small pre-manufactured structure that is designed to sit in the landscape like an architectural folly. Being flexible in situation and use, the owner can place Read- Nest where he or she feels would best suit their needs, whether for study, relaxation or both.
Trekroner Housing, Roskilde, Denmark

Trekroner Housing
The Trekroner Residential Housing Project is part of a large new residential development outside the City of Roskilde immediately adjacent to Roskilde University. In contrast to the large open spaces of the Trekroner development, the two new buildings move individually to create intimate, wind protected, green spaces between them.
