Friars St Ives, 16th-century house restoration
Taken on as something of a rescue project, the restoration of this derelict grade II listed building revealed a rich & varied history. In addition to sensitively revealing the delights of a decidedly characterful and intriguing 16th century house, Mole Architects have added a wholly contemporary addition as an effective foil.

This project has been driven by a client with a very clear sense of destination – the creation of a place to live after retiring as a city headteacher with as little environmental impact as possible: a desire for compact self-sufficiency. Having identified a site on the edge of a fen village she contacted Mole Architects to design her an appropriate house.

William Sutton Prize 2022 Winner
The winner of The William Sutton Prize for Sustainability and Placemaking in its inaugural year is Mole Architects for their proposal for a zero-carbon homebuilding system designed to support the development of Group-Build community housing. The system sets out a step-by-step approach from land purchase to completed building, facilitating community-led housing and tackling associated barriers, with the aim of enabling greater numbers of people to come together to build their own homes.

Black House
Black House sits overlooking the reclaimed land of The Fens. It sits high in the landscape, taking as a model the barns and houses that roll out over the flat land, scattering the landscape like dice. The house is clad in standard cement fibre Eternit corrugated cladding, ubiquitous in the area, painted black. This is set against stained Danish softwood windows.

Cambridge School of Architecture building, Scroope Terrace
The new studio building forms part of a £3 million refurbishment and expansion of the Department of Architecture, responding to a brief uniting teaching and research functions. The Client required a single teaching space clear of columns to house the undergraduate design studio and a building made of timber that retained the existing on-site car parking. A contemporary version of Victorian warehouse buildings was pictured, with cast iron replaced by timber and simply designed details.

This Ely architecture practice describe themselves thus:

“Our projects are diverse in scale and type. We’ve designed studios for artists, and masterplans for developers who have a vision to make better cities. In between these scales we’ve designed many houses and buildings, all contributing to making the places we live and work in richer. Well-designed buildings make life easier, more comfortable, and more pleasurable.”
