Celebrated Modern house design

Also known as Villa Malaparte this house is world-famous, especially amongst architects and is a building often studied at university (though not as much as say Ronchamp or the Barcelona Pavilion!). It is coloured a weather beaten red and located on the eastern side of the Isle of Capri.

The property was built very close to the edge of the cliff (part of its attraction) and roughly 32 metres above the Gulf of Salerno. The house was designed by Italian architect Adalberto Libera around 1937.

Curzio Malaparte actually rejected Libera’s design and built the home himself with the help of Adolfo Amitrano, a local stonemason.

The property was restored between 1980 and 1990.

Arrested numerous times, Curzio had Casa Malaparte created in Capri where he lived under house arrest. After the Second World War, he became a film maker and moved closer to both Togliatti’s Italian Communist Party and the Catholic Church (once a staunch atheist), reputedly becoming members of both before his death.
