Stewart McColl remains a major shareholder in the Archial Group.
Stewart was an entrepreneurial architect. He worked at Conran, and subsequently Fitch, in the early 1970s. He realized the profession was stuck in a rut and needed to follow other industries such as car manufacturing or building contracting into larger firms with more automation.
In 1974 he created his own design business, which in 1984 attracted a 1 million investment package through private bank Kleinwort Benson for 12 per cent of the equity. Kleinwort supported his acquisitive strategy and proposal for a future flotation on the London stock market.
