New British Library
This controversial project sadly dragged on for far too long with changing briefs and changing governments. The resultant £142m building won much praise but also received criticism for being (of course given the circumstances) slightly dated.
Inevitably it was compared to the wonderful old British Library with its grand circular reading room. It was the largest public building constructed in the United Kingdom in the 20th century. No other project, since the building of St. Paul’s Cathedral, took so long to construct or was surrounded by so much controversy. Having taken hundreds of architects to visit this building the resounding consensus is that it is wonderful inside but a little weak on the outside.
