Solar panels above the highway offers an alternative for solar panel fields that take over valuable land in densely populated areas. At the end of 2018 NUON/Vattenfall adopted the concept that was developed already in 2015, and became the principle client.

Except for the double use of the land that infrastructure takes up in general, the concept offers a substantial noise reduction (-18dB) to its surroundings and shows how sustainability can be beautiful as well. The first execution is planned above the A6 highway in Almere, at the future International Horticultural Expo ‘Floriade’.

The WAFX award is awarded to future projects that identify key ecological and societal challenges which architects are actively seeking to address over the next ten years. These challenges span diverse topic areas including climate change, energy saving and carbon emissions, water wastage and shortage, ageing populations and health issues, reusable materials, smart cities, building technology, cultural identity, ethics and power and justice. Bas ten Brinke, architect and owner of 70F architecture, was present to accept the award.

The project is an example of disruptive innovation combined with design and offers a versatile solution for a topical large scale problem.

Sheep Stable Almere
The city of Almere has a sheep population of about 80 sheep. The sheep are mobilized to keep the powerful weed “acanthus” or “bears-breech” that grows in the “vroege vogel” – forest and “kromsloot” – park in Almere under control. To centralize and house this population, a sheep stable was needed. The stable is designed with an a-symmetrical homogeneous cross-section.
