The most famous architect in American history, Frank Lloyd Wright designed over 1,000 structures, including Fallingwater, Johnson Wax Headquarters and the Guggenheim Museum. Roughly 50 miles north of New York City in the middle of Lake Mahopac on its own island, there is a stunning house cantilevered over the water that has had its share of controversy over whether or not it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Taliesin West is a UNESCO World Heritage site and National Historic Landmark nestled in the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale, AZ. It is also the home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the School of Architecture at Taliesin.

The Taliesin LIVE event on April 18th is postponed.

The Taliesin School of Architecture Board has voted to rescind the planned closure.

The Board of Directors for the School of Architecture at Taliesin (SoAT) voted to rescind their previous decision to close its facilities.

The decision followed an international outcry, especially from resident students, over the planned closure. Also, the school secured additional funding to remain open.

The school is located within buildings owned and maintained by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation: to remain open it must gain approval from them.

‘Tirranna’ home in New Canaan, CT, USA

For the first time in 20 years, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rayward–Shepherd House, also known as Tirranna home, in New Canaan, Connecticut is on the market. The Wall Street Journal reports that the home, which Wright built just before his death in 1959 on a 15-acre wooded estate, has been listed for $8 million by the estate of its long-time owner, the late memorabilia mogul and philanthropist Ted Stanley and his wife Vada.

Though the couple renovated the horse-shaped home, they maintained its original architectural integrity, preserving classic FLW details like built-in bookshelves, cabinets and furniture, as well as other unique features such as a rooftop observatory with telescope, gold leaf chimneys, and sculpture paths that wind through the woods.

Bachman-Wilson House, USA

The Bachman-Wilson House (1954), designed by FLW, has been purchased by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, reports the Architectural Record. Back in July 2011 e-architect reported that the house was due to be relocated to New York State, but plans have now changed.

A Frank Lloyd Wright house that its owners say is imperiled because of frequent flooding will soon be headed for higher ground, and presumably, drier ground, too.

Back in January 2014 the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announced that it had purchased Wright’s 1954 Bachman-Wilson house, which it plans to relocate from a riverbank in New Jersey to its campus in Bentonville, Arkansas. “It won’t face an issue of rising water here,” said Diane Carroll, a spokeswoman for Crystal Bridges, which opened in 2011 and is funded by heirs to the Walmart fortune.

Dismantling of the 1,800-sqft concrete-and-mahogany structure, which is located near Princeton, N.J., on a branch of the Raritan River, was due to being in January, with the first sections of the house being trucked across the county this spring. After being reassembled in the woodsy, southwest corner of the museum’s 120-acre grounds, the house will open in 2015.

The sale, which caps a far-ranging, three-year global marketing effort on the part of the owners, was necessary because the home was battered by several destructive floods over the years, said Lawrence Tarantino, an architect who bought the property with this wife, Sharon, a designer, in 1988. Tropical Storm Irene was among the worst of the bunch, as it sent six feet of river water through the building, which has 10-foot-tall plate-glass windows and cantilevered roofs. “It pushed us into the decision to sell,” he said. The couple, who specialize in Wright rehabs and have their own firm, Tarantino Architect, have restored a dozen Wright homes over the years, Lawrence said. Ref. http://bachmanwilsonhouse.com/

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy has facilitated the purchase of the David and Gladys Wright House in Phoenix, Arizona, through an LLC owned by an anonymous benefactor. The transaction closed on December 20 2012 for an undisclosed price.
