The very ambitious interior of the Coast restaurant in London was the first interior job that allowed Marc to “go all out in terms of designing everything.” Featuring recessed lighting, a gigantic spiral central staircase, surrounded by a tubular wall that came out of the floor without touching the sides of the stairs the freestanding tube shape echoes an oft-seen theme in Marc’s work and was covered in Tartan athletic track material—the only solution he found for seamlessly joining the vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Dates built: 2002-03
An important architectural monument and landmark building in New York, the Lever House designed by Gordon Bunshaft and completed in 1952 was acquired by real estate magnates Aby Rosen and Michael Fuchs in 1998. In a state of disrepair at the time, they undertook a sizeable renovation project to restore the building with modern materials while preserving the aesthetics and spirit of the original designs. As part of this they asked Marc to design a restaurant for the building’s ground floor.
