(1788-1863)

born in London; ARA in 1829, RA in 1836, President of the RIBA in 1860.

C. R. Cockerell trained in the London architectural practice of his father, Samuel Pepys Cockerell. Later he worked on the rebuilding of Covent Garden Theatre as assistant to Robert Smirke, followed by an architectural tour of Europe (he discovered reliefs from the Temple of Phigalia, on show in the British Museum).

Charles Cockerell set up his own practice on his return to London in 1817.

Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust has selected Stirling Prize winning architectural firm Witherford Watson Mann to lead the next phase of development at the Literature House in Edinburgh. They will be working in partnership with Groves-Raines Architects Studios and Edinburgh-based Studio MB.
