Avanti Architects’ £8m Beatrice Tate School for pupils with severe/profound and multiple learning difficulties has now officially opened near Mile End. The building provides and inclusive and stimulating new learning environment for students and staff alike, replacing facilities in an outdated and cramped site near Bethnal Green.
Shortlist Architects for Renewal of Oxford Modernist Landmark
The Queen’s College today announced the six teams invited to submit proposals to update the Grade II listed Florey building in order to provide modern facilities and achieve exemplary energy design.
The project is the subject of a two-stage design competition launched in August 2013.

The Florey, now forty years old, is regarded as one of the great post-war modernist buildings in Britain. It is among the few surviving works of the architect James Stirling, acclaimed as the most brilliant designer of his generation.
Competition organiser, Malcolm Reading said: ‘We are delighted by the quality of response to our call for expressions of interest. These teams are highly seasoned, astute practices who are in their prime.

Trumpington Community College will provide places for 750 students and be at the heart of Clay Farm, an urban extension to the south of Cambridge, as 4,000 new homes are built over the next decade. When the new five-form-entry school – which will specialise in science – opens in September 2015, students will be welcomed into a 21st century learning environment.

The architecture practice has won the design competition for an industrial museum and creative industries park in Chongqing. The new museum is the focal point of a 22-hectare masterplan for regenerating the Dadukou district of Chongqing – the site of former iron and steelworks dating back to the 1930s. This is a large and complex development with an overall gross internal area of 630,000m².
Ulster Hospital Building, Northern Ireland

Construction is about to start on the next phase of Avanti Architects’ radical overhaul of Ulster Hospital at Dundonald, a major acute hospital serving the Belfast area. Enabling works – which will allow the existing hospital to continue to operate without disruption – have been completed and, with the appointment of Graham-BAM Healthcare Partnership as contractor, construction is now beginning on a new 288-bed ward block.
