Ytong supports Turkish architect at the Biennale in Venice
At the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, 2014, Ytong is sponsoring the presentation of Tuncer Cakmakli from Istanbul. At the invitation of the GlobalArtAffairs Foundation (GAA), the Turkish planner will present three of his current designs at the Palazzo Bembo.
“This invitation represents a major recognition of our work,” says Tunker Cakmakli, who has studied and worked in Germany. In his three current projects, which are presented as large-scale models made of stainless steel and wood, Cakmakli addresses the main theme of the exhibition: “Time – Space – Existence”. He interprets the exhibition’s theme as a framework for the central spheres of life: trade, habitat and faith.
The trade sphere is represented by the elliptical architecture of a vegetable and fish market in Bursa. The high vaulted spaces of the futuristic structure are reminiscent of the traditional bazaar, and are connected to the ancient cultural traditions of Central Asia both symbolically and in function. The sphere of habitat is represented by a single-family home, which is currently being built in Baden Württemberg. The house is equipped with a completely independent energy system based entirely on the use of solar energy. The subject of faith is represented by the design of a mosque, a project that is still waiting for a principal, and which, even prior to its realization, has garnered multiple international architectural awards as an example of a new, modified spatial experience for faith and sermons.
Tunker Cakmakli is pleased with the support of the international aerated concrete manufacturer: “Ytong’s sponsorship is in direct support of these objectives and provides an important contribution to the cultural education of society. Especially in Turkey, many of our projects are realized with the use of Ytong aerated concrete, which offers decisive advantages in highly earthquake-prone areas.” The relatively low net weight of the material reduces the forces affecting a structure during an earthquake, thus ensuring the stability of buildings and the safety of their inhabitants.
Overall, more than 100 architects from over 40 countries, among them names such as Foster & Partners or GMP, are represented at the Architecture Exhibition, which is part of the Biennale’s official program. The Dutch non-profit organization GAA was founded in New York in 2002, with the objective of raising awareness of philosophical themes in modern art and architecture, and to make these themes available to as wide an international audience as possible. Organizers are estimating around 100,000 visitors per month.
The Architecture Exhibition in the Palazzo Bembo will be complemented by numerous workshops and events. It will be open from June 7 to November 22, 2014. Admission is free.
