Bond Bryan – Architectural Practice of the Year 2018

Bond Bryan shortlisted for Architectural Practice of the Year and Project of the Year at this year’s Education Estates Awards.

Bond Bryan are delighted to be shortlisted for two awards.

Bond Bryan have been shortlisted within two categories: Architectural Practice of the Year and Project of the Year with two projects in the running: National College for High Speed Rail, Doncaster Campus and the Advanced Manufacturing Building, The University of Nottingham.

Architectural Practice of the Year

With four UK studios in Sheffield, Birmingham, London and Kent, Bond Bryan have a nationally-significant presence and have worked with educational providers across the country. They embody many of the different facets that educational architecture features: from Strategic Property Advice to Digital Architecture, as well as many forms of architectural design and consultancy. 2018 has seen Bond Bryan deliver some of their finest and most critically-acclaimed work to-date.

Recent projects and achievements include:
• Completing the National College for Nuclear in Cumbria.
• Being selected onto The University of Sheffield’s Architectural Framework.
• Completing the highly-successful delivery of London Metropolitan University’s Roding Building.
• Current and ongoing delivery of an Estates Masterplan for St. George’s University of London.
• Completion of the National College for High Speed Rail, Birmingham Campus – winner of the RICS Award for Regeneration in the West Midlands.
• Ongoing collaborative contribution as the Information Consultant for the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish III Project.
• Completion of two RIBA Award-winning schemes: the National College for High Speed Rail, Doncaster Campus and the University of Nottingham’s Advanced Manufacturing Building.

Project of the Year – National College for High Speed Rail, Doncaster Campus

The National College for High Speed Rail has been recognised as a pioneering centre of excellence for rail engineering and has been involved in equipping the UK with skills to be world leaders in the growing market of high speed rail construction.

Bond Bryan’s design takes its inspiration from Doncaster’s historical railway heritage, with linearity and visibility being the two key themes. The building balances learner-led academic classrooms with realistic working and fit-out areas and workshops that feature large-scale working components for the current high-speed rail industry and a high-speed locomotive for diagnostic training.

With a raft of sustainable features and a BREEAM Excellent rating, this project won both the RIBA Yorkshire Sustainability Award and the overall RIBA Yorkshire Regional Award. Alongside these highly-esteemed awards, this project has also received the Project of the Year and Best of the Best at the Constructing Excellence Award in the region and is now shortlisted for the national award.

Project of the Year – Advanced Manufacturing Building, The University of Nottingham
This iconic gateway building brings together a diverse range of innovative research groups as well as leading industry experts into one facility at the entrance to the University’s city centre Jubilee Campus. Having won the commission for this project – via a design competition in late 2014 – Bond Bryan were able to deliver the University’s requirements with an efficient maximisation of site space within a single phase.

Now fully operational, this building has received critical commendation across the country – winning the RIBA East Midlands Award for the region and showcasing the positive impact that a collaborative effort, between client and design team, can have on a building.
The annual Education Estates Awards & Dinner will take place at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, on the 16th October.

Bond Bryan Sheffield Studio celebrate their 30th Birthday

Last night, Sheffield-based practice, Bond Bryan, welcomed over 200 guests to celebrate its 30th birthday – thanking colleagues, clients and collaborators for their business and continued friendship.

The Bond Bryan team celebrated this milestone at The Mowbray, Kelham Island, (photo below) where guests were shown a ‘sneak peek’ of their new logo – part of their upcoming brand re-launch and new website.

This major architectural consultancy – founded in 1988 – has worked on some of the region’s most notable projects: their contribution to the growth of The University of Sheffield and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District – as well as their work alongside Sheffield Hallam University – have firmly established them as a pre-eminent practice within the Sheffield City Region.

Their expertise is founded upon the design – and successful delivery – of projects throughout the UK and, today, sees them leading the field in strategy, digital, master-planning and designing responsive and innovative spaces within all aspects of the education, advanced manufacturing, commercial and residential sectors.

Bond Bryan Managing Director, Jonathan Herbert explains: “This is a really exciting time for Bond Bryan and what we have achieved, as a business – and there is a lot to celebrate. Bond Bryan enable people to connect, innovate, be inspired and grow by designing and shaping distinctive environments and they love doing it – this was made very apparent by the many guests from various disciplines who were in attendance on Thursday night.

Bond Bryan recently won three major RIBA Awards and is immensely proud of its Sheffield heritage and the work it is doing within and around the Sheffield City Region.

• Delivering projects with 10 Universities across the country – including the £30m Institute of Education, a major teaching building for Sheffield Hallam University

Bond Bryan are delighted to be shortlisted for two awards at the 2017 Education Estates Awards. These awards focus attention on some of the most important issues within the Education sector and recognise the very best companies, collaborations and projects – sharing best practice and inspiring others to adopt new and better ways of working that deliver outstanding results.

Architectural Practice of the Year

With UK-based design studios in London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Kent, Bond Bryan Architects work embraces the worlds of Strategic Property Advice, Masterplanning, Architecture, Landscape, Interiors and Digital Strategy. 2016/17 has seen us deliver landmark projects for all main education subsectors: Commercial Research Partnerships, Higher Education, Further Education, Secondary Schools, SEN Schools and Primary/Nursery Education.

Innovation in Teaching and Learning

As well as a 268-seat lecture theatre with ‘turn and learn’ seating, Charles Street was designed to include flexible, state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, including a SCALE UP room and student-centred informal learning spaces. Teaching rooms contain flexible furniture which allows academics to quickly and easily change the room layout to suit the activity taking place. The Learning Enhancement and Academic Development team have worked closely with academic staff to introduce and embed new pedagogies, enabled by the presence of these flexible formal and informal learning spaces. The easily-adaptable spaces allow academics to think differently about their teaching practice and the students benefit from the adjacent informal learning space, allowing them to continue working on tasks together outside of formal teaching time.

Taking the principles established in Charles Street, the University are now beginning to adapt spaces within their existing buildings to mirror these flexible learning environments, ensuring that students and staff can embrace new and innovative ways of working and learning.

Matt Hutton, Lead Designer, commented: “This project has been a labour of love for the whole design team and we believe the results speak for themselves. The opportunities provided by the building and the flexibility in teaching and learning methods available will, undoubtedly, enable the University to be at the forefront of education delivery for many years into the future.”

The annual Education Estates Awards & Dinner will take place on the first night of the Education Estates conference – 1st November at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

The prestigious awards ceremony – hosted at The Hilton, Park Lane – will take place on Thursday, 9th November 2017.

Bond Bryan – Selected For All Three LSC Regions

Bond Bryan Architects is one of only two practices to have been selected for the Learning & Skills Council framework in all three regions of the UK, to provide design and consultancy services to colleges seeking new buildings and refurbishment projects, reinforcing the firm’s position at the leading edge of Further Education design.

Bond Bryan managing director, Jonathan Herbert, says: “Being one of only two firms named on all three regional frameworks really vindicates our approach because we stand for excellent design, sound delivery and, above all, expert knowledge of the education sector’s needs. Our work on Matthew Boulton College, for instance, exemplifies a design led by education drivers and educators.”

Matthew Boulton College is well known in the sector as having raised the bar in terms of a design-led educational establishment and has resulted in recruitment benefits for the college which relocated to its original site within a regeneration area and the new ‘learning quarter’ Birmingham city centre. The nine-storey project is short-listed for this year’s RIBA/LSC Further Education Design Awards.

Bond Bryan has recently opened a southern studio in Kent and Greham Raynham, the new MD of Bond Bryan in the south, said: “We started here on 2 January 2008. Jeff Stibbons and Stewart Paine and I all have significant experience in creating places for learning.

“We are busy developing some exciting project opportunities in the FE sector including Basildon College, Westminster Kingsway College, Boston College and the International Climate Exchange building at Cambridge.

“We have also been building our team and will have 18 staff by May with a view to growing further in response to the demand in the FE sector as the LSC framework becomes active.

“Bond Bryan has a great ethos of design quality in response to client-focused need and as leaders in education architecture we are excited about the future of the south studio as the LSC framework starts to operate and other opportunities in the sector come forward. Bond Bryan is also active in commercial and regeneration projects and we will be looking to build on existing practice expertise in these fields in the Southern Studio.”
