Archial – Opinion
Archial Gives Cautious Welcome to Scottish Government’s £2.5 Billion Capital Projects Commitment
Archial, one of the country’s largest architectural practices and a member of the global Ingenium Group of companies, has given a cautious welcome to the Scottish Government’s commitment to take forward a major new pipeline of transport, education and health infrastructure projects, worth up to £2.5 billion through the Non-Profit Distributing (NPD) model as announced in its 2011-12 Draft Budget.
However, Bob Hall, Joint Managing Director at the practice, warned that, given that the Scottish Government’s capital budget will fall by some £800 million in cash terms next year, compared to 2010-11 – representing a real terms cut of 26 per cent – cuts on capital spending will mean that the economic environment for architects in Scotland will remain challenging throughout this period.
The Scottish Government’s 2011-12 Draft Budget proposes major investments to support national infrastructure priorities, including initial work on the new Forth Crossing, investment in the South Glasgow Hospitals – both to be delivered through traditional capital funding – and Scotland’s Schools for the Future building programme.
In addition, Ministers propose a new pipeline of revenue-funded NPD investment to be delivered by the Scottish Futures Trust in partnership with the Scottish Government, local government, NHS boards and other public bodies.
Mr Hall said: “Whilst Finance Secretary John Swinney’s response to a deep cut in Scotland’s capital budget by transferring £100m from this year’s current expenditure to next year to supplement capital spending is to be welcomed, it is evident that architects will be required to respond to the new economic reality within which we operate by thinking creatively to identify innovative ways of achieving clients’ goals and seeking solutions to their various challenges.”
The firm is an international architectural specialist with public and private-sector clients. The diverse Archial portfolio includes work in corporate, education, government, healthcare, industrial, mixed-use, residential, retail and transport sectors. Archial employs approximately 300 employees in offices throughout England and Scotland. The award-winning Archial organisation is recognised for delivering intelligent solutions that combine creative excellence with commercial success.

Vision in Cambridge
Subsequent to its purchase by the privately held international Ingenium Group, Archial, one of the country’s largest architectural practices is relocating to larger premises in Cambridge.
The move is a continuation of the company’s proposed merger of its Cambridge, Ipswich and Bedford offices into a new East of England office based in Cambridge and will see the business relocate to prestigious new permanent offices by the end of the year, pooling the strengths of the three Archial offices.
The practice currently situated in Burleigh Street, Cambridge, will be relocated, on a temporary basis, to Compass House, Vision Park, Chivers Way, Histon, Cambridge effective from 11 October 2010 whilst work on the permanent Archial office is completed.
Darren Heffer, Director of the Cambridge office stated: “We are delighted to become part of the expanding and dynamic Ingenium Group and look to the future with huge optimism.
“The forthcoming relocation of our premises to an East of England regional office here in Cambridge will reinforce the excellent service we already provide for our many loyal clients and provide a tangible demonstration of the intent and commitment of the Ingenium Group in driving our business forward.”

Archial in administration
Archial went into administration on 21 Sep 2010
The sixth largest architects practice in the UK, formerly listed on the stock market, has failed due to unpaid tax bills. The administrators for Archial are PwC.
The British architecture firm had 17 UK architects offices plus studios in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.
The Archial practice [Europe] is related to Alsop Sparch [Asia] but Will Alsop is now with RMJM (as Will Alsop at RMJM). The pace of transition from practice to merger and so on has been rapid, perhaps too rapid. 22 Sep

The SMC Group has now changed its name to the Archial Group Plc, following approval by shareholders at the Extraordinary General Meeting on 5 Jan 2009.
News Dec 2008
Architect SMC to change its name to Archial Group and Will Alsop, whose firm was acquired by SMC Group in March 2006, will run his firm as a separate entity from the Archial brand.
Instead of operating under 14 separate SMC companies as it does now, the group will restructure to five divisions:-
-Archial, which will cover the UK & Europe
-Sparch, which will cover the Asian market
-Alsop, which will produce “provocative and colourful” designs by Stirling Prize-winner Will Alsop
-Archial Services, a FM consultancy
-Archial Special Projects, which is a vehicle for joint ventures or large schemes.
Archial will merge its two Edinburgh and three Glasgow offices to one in each city at some point in the next year.
Following an intense series of acquisitions in 2006, the SMC Group was forced to issue profit warnings to the City in January and June of 2007.
