The new £2.5m Caryl Churchill theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London, will officially open on 13 November. The 178 seat theatre is built alongside the Grade II listed Sutherland House and is an extension of the University’s leading Department of Drama and Theatre located in Egham, Surrey. Named after world-renowned British playwright Caryl Churchill, it replaces the 30-year-old ‘black box’ theatre; a lightweight prefabricated studio extension that was added to the east side of the Regency building in the 1970s.

St James Theatre
The new theatre designed by Foster Wilson Architects has been built on the site of the old Westminster Theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 2002. The Theatre Complex includes a new 312 seat auditorium as well as a 100 seat studio theatre, bar and restaurant. Above the theatre is a new apartment building, designed by Loates Taylor Shannon with interiors designed in conjunction with Nicky Haslam.

Tim Foster Architects becomes Foster Wilson Architects
Tim Foster Architects will be changing its name to Foster Wilson Architects from 1 October 2009. This change marks thirty years since the foundation of the practice by Tim Foster and recognises Edmund Wilson’s role as partner.
The practice has a reputation for arts and education projects especially theatre design notably The Broadway Theatres in Barking and Peterborough, the Tricycle Theatre and Cinema in north London and the Norwich Theatre Royal. The practice is increasingly involved in work to a range of listed buildings, requiring restoration of the original building, combined with contrasting modern interventions such as the Parabola Arts Centre for The Cheltenham Ladies College, completing next month.
Foster Wilson Architects has a growing portfolio of residential and commercial projects, ranging from one-off houses to corporate offices.
Architect Tim Foster said: “This is an exciting change for the practice indicating our growing skill base and status as a limited liability partnership.”
The practice was founded by Tim Foster in 1979 and has grown steadily to become an established medium scale office with a reputation for sensitive and cost effective design. In 2004 Edmund Wilson joined Tim Foster as a partner and a limited liability partnership was formed.
Tim Foster, senior partner trained at the Cambridge University School of Architecture, where he also worked as a stage designer. He has worked as an Arts Council Lottery assessor in England and Scotland. He is a council member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians, chairman of the ABTT Theatre Planning Committee and represents the UK on the OISTAT Architecture Commission. He is a board member of the Tricycle Theatre Company in London and Trustee of The Theatres Trust.
Edmund Wilson, partner trained at the Cambridge University School of Architecture and qualified as an architect in 1996. Before joining Tim Foster Architects he worked for Michael Mallinson Architects, ORMS Architects and CZWG Architects. Edmund was project architect for the Tricycle Cinema, winner of four major design awards and the Civic Trust Award winning Broadway Theatre in Barking.
