Zaha Hadid Architects wins appeal in naming dispute

In a significant legal victory, Patrik Schumacher, principal of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), has won a Court of Appeal case against the Zaha Hadid Foundation over the continued use of the late architect’s name.

The UK Court of Appeal overturned a 2024 High Court ruling, determining that a 2013 licensing agreement—signed by Zaha Hadid before her death in 2016—was not intended to last indefinitely. The agreement required the British architecture practice to:

– Retain Zaha Hadid’s name in the architectural firm’s title

– Pay the foundation 6% of annual revenue

Under those terms, the foundation received £21.4 million between 2018 and 2024.

What the ruling means

The appeal court found that the agreement could be terminated with reasonable notice, opening the possibility for:

– A renaming of the practice

– A renegotiated licensing agreement

– Revised financial terms between the studio and foundation

In response, Zaha Hadid Architects stated it would enter into “constructive discussions” with the foundation regarding an updated licence.

Background to the dispute

This case is the latest development in a broader and often public conflict between the studio and the foundation following Hadid’s death. Previous disputes included a four-year legal battle over her estate, which concluded in 2020.

The tension has centered on:

– Control of Hadid’s intellectual legacy

– Financial arrangements tied to her name

– Governance and influence over the brand

Why this matters

Zaha Hadid Architects remains one of the world’s most high-profile architecture practices. A potential name change would mark a major shift in the global architecture landscape, given the strong brand equity attached to Hadid’s legacy.
