National Marine Centre in North Berwick Building, East Lothian, Southeast Scotland

A petition signed by nearly 3,000 people against the development of a proposed National Marine Centre in North Berwick has been handed to East Lothian Council, according to the East Lothian Courier.

The petition was organised by the North Berwick Harbour Trust Association (NBHTA) in an attempt to stop the multi-million-pound development (see image below, by architects Simpson & Brown), which would be an extension to the existing Scottish Seabird Centre.

University of Glasgow Campus Masterplan, Strathcylde, West Scotland

Global infrastructure services firm AECOM and 7N Architects have secured Planning Permission in Principle consent from Glasgow City Council for their masterplan for the University of Glasgow.

The masterplan provides a development and placemaking framework for a significant expansion of the University’s Gilmorehill Campus on the site of the former Glasgow Western Infirmary in the heart of the West End of the city.

Willow Tearooms Visitor Centre, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, Scotland

Simpson & Brown Architects have prepared detailed proposals for the upgrade of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Willow Tearooms at Sauchiehall St, Glasgow, to form an adjoining visitor centre.

This will be facilitated by the construction of a double-height rear extension housing a shop, exhibition space and dining room for the A-listed café with a roof terrace, auditorium, conference suite and billiard room.

Simpson & Brown will also help conserver the existing fabric plus integrate new services and lifts. The design team includes Studioarc, Rybka, David Narro Associates, Alliance CDM, Building Learning and People Friendly Design.

The new Chapel of Saint Albert the Great, built for the University Chaplaincy and Friary for The Order of Preachers, the Dominican Order, was completed in late 2012. This new chapel is situated in the garden of one of the original townhouses on the west side of George Square and replaces the previous chapel which was located on the upper floor of one of the adjoining properties.

Paisley Abbey Visitor Centre, Scotland
Simpson & Brown Architects submit proposal for £2m Paisley Abbey Visitor Centre. Work will include rebuilding the fourth cloister to create a new entrance using medieval stones. The building will house a larger cafe/restaurant, shop, heritage interpretation and hall for receptions, exhibitions and conferences. The historic Place Of Paisley – or Palace of Paisley, the only remaining part of the extensive monastery associated with the Abbey – will be refurbished with better visitor facilities and community space. Edinburgh architecture practice Simpson & Brown Architects were also responsible for the Burns International Museum, Alloway, which opened in 2010.

Burns Museum
Building for the National Trust for Scotland. The new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum opened to the public in Dec 2010. It is arranged around a 500 sqm exhibition gallery displaying many of the 5000 artefacts in the Museum’s collection, each one telling in a lively and informative manner about Robert Burns’ life, inspiration, fame and identity. The new building also accommodates a café, a gift shop and an Education Room.

A new £1.6m state-of-the art visitor centre has opened its doors at Dawyck Botanic Garden, near Stobo, in the Scottish Borders. Funded by the Scottish Government and Scottish Borders Enterprise, the building is launched during the 30th anniversary year of Dawyck coming into the care of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and is the first bespoke facility of this nature within the organisation’s four Gardens.
