World-renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto to visit Estonia
20 May 2014 – In connection with his position on the jury for Stage II of the Arvo Pärt Centre architecture competition, Sou Fujimoto – one of the leading and best-known designers of contemporary architecture in the world today – will be visiting Estonia from 11-14 June. On 12 June the Union of Estonian Architects will be organising a public lecture entitled ‘Between Nature and Architecture’ at which Fujimoto will showcase his work and some of the more interesting projects he is currently involved in.

Born in 1971, Fujimoto is an architect whose designs are characterised by a fresh and innovative approach to the relationship between architectural space and the human body.

“Like a lot of Japanese architects, Fujimoto’s work is largely inspired by nature,” explained Peeter Pere, Deputy Chairman of the Union of Estonian Architects. “He himself has said that forests, caves and nests have been sources of inspiration for his work. How he then translates these into the amazing architecture he creates – well, it’s as though he’s invested with a higher power!” Earlier this year Fujimoto won the ‘Architectural Folie of the 21st Century’ competition in Montpellier. He is also the youngest architect ever to have received the honour of being invited to design the annual Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion in London, which he did in 2013. In 2012 he was also part of the team behind the Japanese pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, which won the Golden Lion.

His most important works include House NA (2011), the Musashino Art University Museum & Library (2010), Final Wooden House (2008) and House N (2008). Among the many accolades he has won are the main prize in the 2006 AR Awards (Children’s Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation), first prize in the international competition for the ‘Taiwan Tower’ and first prize in the ‘Beton Hala Waterfront Center’ competition in 2011.

Pere says that the high level of Japanese architecture is also reflected in the fact that ever since the establishment in 1979 of the Pritzker Architecture Prize – the equivalent of the Nobel prize in the field of architectural design – it has been awarded to seven Japanese designers in its thirty five years’ history, including Mr. Toyo Ito and Mr. Shigeru Ban for 2013 and 2014 in two consecutive years. Fujimoto will be speaking at the ‘Between Nature and Architecture’ lecture, which will start at 19:00 on 12 June 2014 at the Kanuti Guild Hall in Tallinn. The lecture will be given in English. Attendance is free of charge.

This project is a new library for one of the distinguished art universities in Japan. It involves designing a new library building and refurbishing the existing building into an art gallery, which will ultimately create a new integration of the Library and the Art Gallery

Dalarna Media Arena
Danish ADEPT with this Japanese architects office and an advisory team consisting of Topotek1, Rambøll A/S and Bosch & Fjord win the architecture competition for a new library in Falun, Sweden, with the project “Dalarna Media Arena”. The project, which consists of a 3,000 sqm library and an adjoining plaza, is a part of Dalarna University campus.
