BnL Bibliothèque Nationale de Luxembourg,
The planned BnL designed by German architects BOLLES+WILSON, with its new and optimized program, addresses the Boulevard with an inviting, transparent and representative conical facade that metaphorically sucks visitors deep into the interior. Above the entrance and behind the inwardly sloping facade are conference rooms (bridging the entrance foyer). The interior unfolds as a landscape of reading terraces stepping up to a consultation deck, the top of five floors of secure archives, a magazine acropolis, the core of the building.

There is today an enormous potential in the re-scripting of grand industrial spaces, survivors from an epoch that had less trouble expressing itself and its mechanical or technical potency than our current mean and exploitative ‘global shopping-centre-culture’. One thinks of São Paulo’s Fábrica da Pompéia by Lina Bo Bardi, London’s Tate Bankside, or the Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen, Germany.

Kindergarten in Münster
The elegant form of the elliptical nave physically anchors its surrounding neighbourhood. Now deconsecrated the logical investment driven choice would have been for St. Sebastian to disappear. Bravely the 2009 competition jury awarded the first prize to this scheme which envisaged the characteristic form given a new life and function – a kindergarten framed and shielded by site perimeter housing (2nd construction phase).

BOLLES+WILSON – Building Award News
BOLLES + WILSON receive an ‘International Architecture Award 2012‘ for the design of a new headquarter for a concrete plant in Erwitte, Germany
The ‘International Architecture Award’ is annually awarded by the ‘Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design’ and the ‘European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies’ and is considered as one of the most prestigious international awards for innovative and outstanding design. The rewarded design of a new headquarter for a concrete plant in Erwitte (Germany) emerged from an invited competition in 2011 where it won a first prize.
The design – the optimal concrete beam. The existing vertical cement silo is complimented by a new horizontal administration deck. The deck hovers, cantilevering dramatically over green fields (entrance side) and also symmetrically out over a renaturalised cement quarry (wildlife protection zone).
The 12m cantilever is achieved with a structural optimised beam – minimal material, maximum openings for internal flexibility. In addition there is a special energy concept, which meets the requirements of a sustainably managed modern company.
