Edinburgh Airport Control Tower Building – a memorable design
structural engineer: ARUP
services engineer: Doig & Smith
Client: BAA Scotland
The existing Control Tower was built in the 1940’s at Turnhouse, on the east side of the airfield. Over the following 50 years, there have been numerous extensions to the tower to accommodate technological changes and growth in Air Traffic Control (ATC) services.
A new 57 metres high ATC tower was built and has become a landmark structure on the Edinburgh skyline. The four storey base building includes office accommodations on the ground and first floors. Two other floors are located at the top of the tower: the equipment room and welfare facilities are on the lower floor while the VCR is located on the very top floor.

UK Architect Practice Information
Former architect studio – offices based in Scotland & England, UK
REID Architecture was a British architectural practice active in the UK before 2007 — best known for its work in Scotland and England across a wide range of sectors including airport, office, retail, residential, leisure, industrial, and urban design projects. It operated as an independent firm from its founding in the late 1970s (est. 1979) until June 2007, when it merged with 3D Architects to form the larger practice 3DReid.
Key facts about REID Architecture (pre‑2007):
Established: 1979 (operated across Scotland and England).
Practice Focus: A broad portfolio including airport terminals, commercial buildings, retail centres, housing, and urban design. The firm was known for a research‑driven design ethos and a methodology it termed “Knowledge Design.”
Notable Projects:
– Edinburgh Airport Control Tower (mid‑2000s) — a prominent landmark project in Scotland.
– Designs for other infrastructure, commercial, and civic buildings throughout the UK.
Merger: In June 2007, REID Architecture formally merged with 3D Architects, creating 3DReid, one of the UK’s leading practices at that time with offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, and Manchester.
After the merger, the REID Architecture name ceased to operate independently, and its work and team became part of 3DReid’s broader organisational structure.
