SUMIE Show by Edward Suzuki
To commemorate the publication of the English edition of his book “GOoD DESIGN Philosophy” as well as my office’s 40th anniversary, this Japanese architect is holding a show of his SUMIE (Japanese ink drawing) from April 2 to 7 in Aoyama’s Gallery 5610.

The English edition of his book “GOoD DESIGN Philosophy” is basically a compilation of blogs that he had posted over the years on his thoughts about the Universe, Nature, physics, architecture, et al, and is not just a translated but an updated version of his original book published five years ago. Both the English and the Japanese editions would be available for purchase at a discounted price at the show.

During the course of the week, the architect is holding a silent auction to collect funds to help the poor Rohingya children through the international organization HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH.

Praise for GOoD Design Philosophy

(In alphabetical order, by last name)

Edward Suzuki’s GOoD Design Philosophy affirms through his own research and personal experiences what Ayurveda—the science of life—has professed and taught for millennia: that the Universe and all life in it are fundamentally designed to sustain, evolve, and thrive. I highly recommend this work for the bridge it builds between ancient wisdom and pioneering science.Deepak Chopra, MD; author of You Are the Universe

Edward Suzuki’s spirited enquiries into the workings of Nature have given us this delightful compilation of insights into his work and philosophy—which, it turns out, are one and the same.* —Kenji Ekuan (1929–2015), chairman, GK Design Group

Your book is fascinating and important. I am pleased to recommend its serious lecture to everyone interested in appreciating and admiring the supreme design of this universe, and of all universes in the cosmos. Ervin Laszlo, director and cofounder of the Ervin Laszlo Institute for Advanced Study (ELIAS) and of the Laszlo New-Paradigm Leadership Center

At a time when the survival of humanity is untenable if our current course is pursued, we are blessed with the contribution of cultural creativesinnovators whose beliefs, worldviews, values, and ways of life can safely guide our destiny. Edward Suzuki is one such transformational thinker. Since 50 percent of extracted planetary resources are used in construction, Suzuki’s perspective as an award-winning architect can obviously have a profound impact on the fate of civilization.

Suzuki’s professional success attests to his innate ability to apply the principles of geometrythe mathematics behind the properties and relationships of structure in space. As Plato maintained, “Geometry existed before creation—its principles are fundamental to the organization of the Universe. Suzuki’s theoretical insights are such that he was able to introduce a novel predictive model of atomic and molecular structure. In GOoD Design Philosophy, he reverse-engineers the geometry of Nature down to the fundamental principles acting at the level of atoms, providing an enlightening account of an architect traversing both physical and social sciences to reveal that Love is the elementary unifying force in our physical Universe.

GOoD Design Philosophy is a powerful prescription for helping us successfully evolveor more accurately, thriveinto the future. I personally regard Suzuki’s visionary and spiritual outlook as being fundamental to shaping the views and practices of the emerging new culture. His GOoD Design Philosophy is an informative and inspirational read. Bruce H. Lipton, stem cell biologist; author of The Biology of Belief, Spontaneous Evolution, The Honeymoon Effect; 2009 Goi Peace Award recipient

Edward Suzuki has composed an important yet easy-to-read book about re-imagining the processes and goals of design for living in the 21st century. He relates his personal and professional experiences, strivings, memories, education, travels, insights, revelations, and hopes; the result is synergistic. He uses simple, thoughtful stories to persuade us that matters deemed natural, spiritual, and practical aren’t distinctly different but are actually one and the same (which he happily calls “nature’s dei-signs”). His outlooks and in-looks encourage us to appreciate and apply nature’s beautiful and successful timeless principles, which are written in a geometric language of practical elegance, to our own sustainable designs. Suzuki’s insights convince us that this truly is the way forward toward building a better world for a more cooperative and peaceful humanity. This book will inspire, encourage, and entertain not only architects and designers but also scientists, inventors, readers of biography, and admirers of nature’s wisdom. I highly recommend this work. Michael S. Schneider, author of A Beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe; senior adjunct professor, California College of the Arts, teaching “Mathematical Ideas for Artists”

Edward Suzuki has written a masterpiece that is deeply grounded in the integrity and profound inquiry that have suffused his life’s work. His understanding of the distinction between design and architecture is like no one else’s and his latest book is a treasure trove of wisdom and divine teaching about the greatest design of all—our miraculous Universe. The pages brim with beauty, poetry, elegance, clarity, inspiration, and truth. You will be astounded, empowered, and deeply moved by what he has written. What’s more, you will be overwhelmed with an experience of LOVE. This book will change your life.Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money; cofounder, the Pachamama Alliance

Kamakura House
Located in only about a five-minute walking distance from the railroad station, this house sits in a commercial/residential zone. As such, the neighboring houses and shops encroach upon the site rather closely, so much so that from the start the idea to “look out” from the property was abandoned to instead “look inward” was adopted. Since the client-owner had a vast amount of art collection and wished to display such art in the new house, the theme “House like a Museum” became the design generator.

This is a villa situated about an hour’s rapid train ride from Tokyo in a mountain resort of Karuizawa, Japan. It is basically a wooden structure with the peripheral balconies in steel. The design is adapted from passive energy principles applied in the world-famous Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto. The only artificially operated system is the radiant hot-water heating embedded in the floor, running the entire length of the peripheral fenestration with heat pump air conditioning units as supplements just in case.
