The project is intended to increase public access to exhibits on the history, construction and legacy of the statue, and provide additional shelter during inclement weather, according to an environmental review the National Park Service released last month. Currently only about 20% of visitors to Liberty Island can access the pedestal that houses the museum, and those who do so must undergo additional security screening.

The museum is sited on a large plaza bisected by a sunken Wadi, a pedestrian park that flows through the KAFD development. Over 340,000 square-feet will be dedicated to museum functions, such as permanent and temporary galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, and a destination restaurant and terrace.

FXFOWLE’s portions of the development include four parcels currently under construction (Parcels 2.09, 2.14, and 4.07-08, photos attached) and two additional parcels in schematic design. The first four parcels are on track for 2011 completion and are pursuing LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council.
