Barra Park open-air theatre, Hayes, west London, UK
Date built: 2005

Clapton Portico, Hackney, London
Date built: 2006
Learning resource centre and restoration of listed building
The blasted remains of the Clapton Portico are a popular and dramatic local landmark in Hackney, North London. Originally constructed in 1825 as an orphanage, the imposing stone Doric portico served as the entrance to a larger complex of buildings, for much its life the headquarters of the Salvation Army. When the Salvation Army moved out in 1975 the rest of the buildings were demolished leaving the Portico and connecting colonnades as a roofless and steadily deteriorating townscape monument.
A new learning centre was added onto the back fo the original portico structure which was retained as an entrance. The form of the addition relates to the main volume of the portico but the facades provide a contrast to the restored stonework. Louvres cover the principal elevations combining solar shading functions with added security for the equipment inside the building and a lighter, layered surface compared to the Portico.
European Investment Bank Headquarters, London
Date built: 2009
Office fit-out
photo : Brady Mallalieu Architects
A new fitout for the London headquarters of the European Investment Bank provides facilities for permanent and visiting staff.
A large walnut wall wraps around the core to conceal uneven steps in the building providing nooks for coffee, cloaks and water. The entrance space in front of the lift is opened up to accommodate a waiting area with good daylight and visual connections through the arched window to the city and the previously cellular offices to the back of the plan have been omitted to create an open plan office flood with natural light. A glass pod provides shared meeting space for the private offices and the main office area. An acoustic sliding wall divides the boardroom from the secondary meeting room when closed and parks in the corridor leaving clear space for larger functions.
Highbury Crescent, Islington, north London
Date built: 2008
Private Housing
A new build contemporary design of 24 flats and 10 houses for The Murphy Group. The site is within the Highbury Fields Conservation Area. The new block facing Highbury Fields has 12 flats and is of the scale and massing to reflect the rhythm of its neighbouring Victorian Villas. Behind this block is a pair of smaller blocks providing a further 12 flats and in the depth of the site running down to Ronalds Road at the rear of the site is a street of 10 detached houses. The position of this new roadway is governed by the railway tunnel, one of several which run below the site.

Leonard Place, Hackney, north east London
Date built: 2006
Housing (shared ownership)
This is a new build contemproary social housing project for Community Housing Group (One Housing group) in Stoke Newington in Hackney. A four storey single Infill house has been designed to fit within the existing terrace gap on Allen Rd, and to the rear is a new build housing project of seven mews style L-shaped designed houses and flats.
This was a brownfield site located between two existing Victorian terraces. Great care has been taken to avoid overlooking so that each house has its main rooms oriented towards the afternoon sun and away from the windows in properties surrounding the site. The new houses are constructed to be as low as possible, particularly along the northern edge at the rear of the gardens to Clonbrock Road.
Private House, Richmond-upon-Thames, south west London
Date built: 2002
House
This new build family house has been constructed within a Conservation Area in Richmond upon Thames.
The design seeks to acknowledge the different Victorian buildings on either side and to respond to them in a contemporary manner.
The deep plan building is organized around a central atrium space, off which all the main rooms of the house open. It is designed to find a middle ground between modern open plan and traditional separate rooms, by defining rooms as spaces, but allowing overlapping of spaces at the edges. Large sliding walls and doors also add flexibility.
Circulation is through the main rooms and up short flights between different levels rather than by traditional corridors and stairwells. The commission also included designing the exterior and garden spaces.
St Catherines Foyer and Sports Centre, Dublin, Ireland
Date built: 2003
Foyer housing, sports centre and educational facilities

The living accommodation is grouped around a south facing courtyard and provides 8 cluster groups of 6 study bedrooms with their own shared kitchen and dining facilities, with communal rooms and classrooms for training on the ground floor.
School of Architecture, Islington, London
Date built: 1997
Studios, offices and teaching space
The new school of Architecture and Interior Design was designed in two sections, the conversion of a two storey Victorian warehouse to the rear and a new build front building on Holloway Road, North London.
The front building is a brick clad concrete frame structure enclosing new studios, lecture hall and exhibition spaces, ancillary offices and seminar rooms. There is a terrace at roof level. The rear warehouse contains back up areas, workshops, laboratories and dark rooms with studio spaces at first floor.
The ground floor is the shop window of the school with large windows opening onto the main exhibition and lecture spaces. A new glazed link connects the warehouse to the front building at the rear. The building was conceived as raw construction with all materials left in their natural state and all details and services exposed to reveal the workings and construction of the building to the students.
