Kees Christiaanse wins Dutch ARC17 Oeuvre Award
Rotterdam/Zurich, 16 November 2017 – Today it was announced that Kees Christiaanse, founder and partner of KCAP, is the winner of the prestigious Dutch ARC17 Oeuvre Award. The jury praises his work, his idiosyncratic vision of the city and his way of working, which is completely unique.
The award is annually awarded to honour one’s life time achievement and lasting and innovative contribution to the improvement of the built environment. On November 30th, the prize will be awarded at the ARC17 Award event in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Alphen aan den Rijn, 16 November 2017
Kees Christiaanse awarded with ARC17 Oeuvre Award
Kees Christiaanse (KCAP) is this year’s winner of the ARC17 Oeuvre Award. The jury praises his work, his idiosyncratic vision of the city and his way of working, which is completely unique. The jury led by Patrick van der Klooster crowns a large and influential architect and urban planner.
Craftsmanship in complex urban planning situations
Kees Christiaanse works on a broad oeuvre that shows a thorough knowledge of the city. He plays a leading role in the European debate on the role of urban centers. Projects such as Hafencity in Hamburg, Wijnhaveneiland in Rotterdam and the station area of Zurich are forerunners.
Patrick van der Klooster, chairman of the jury: “Unlike most architects and urban planners, Christiaanse fathoms the complexity of the assignment very well. He combines this skill with a great strategic understanding. The ability to commute between different levels and the people working at these levels shows his mastery.”
“Kees Christiaanse recognizes the qualities of the nineteenth-century city. He renews this where possible, but embraces continuity where necessary. In this way he knows how to reconcile the existing city with the desired contemporary comfort. On the changes in spatial planning, with other ways of working and a shift from industry to service, Christiaanse comes up with compelling answers.”
According to the jury, the Oeuvre Award can also be regarded as a prize for the KCAP office that he founded in 1989. Christiaanse has gathered a team that performs his views in a consistent manner. Completely in line with the intentions of the ‘founding father’, the agency works as a connector and derives authority from pure professionalism.
ARC17 Oeuvre Award
The ARC17 Oeuvre Award is annually awarded by the editors of ‘de Architect’ to a person who makes a lasting and innovative contribution to the improvement of the built environment. This year’s jury consists of Patrick van der Klooster (AIR, chairman), Wienke Bodewes (Amvest), Ninke Happel (HCVA) and Harm Tilman (De Architect, secretary). Previous winners of the ARC Oeuvre Award are Office Winhov, Michael van Gessel, Riek Bakker, Thomas Rau and Maarten Kloos.
ARC17 Awards
Kees Christiaanse will receive the ARC17 Oeuvre Award on 30 November 2017. During a festive evening at De Kauwgomballenfabriek in Amsterdam, the winners of six other categories in the ARC17 Awards will also be announced. For more information, visit www.arc-awards.nl

KCAP wins international design competition ‘Sewoon District #4’ in Seoul, Korea
Rotterdam, March 2017 – KCAP Architects&Planners has won the international design competition to redevelop ‘Sewoon District #4’ area in Seoul, Korea into a sustainable mixed-use area combining urban manufacturing and respecting its cultural heritage. That was announced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 2nd of March 2017.
Flexible, people-oriented design that starts from historic and cultural values
KCAP‘s plan proposes an integrated approach for the 280.000 m2 of mixed uses including offices, retail, hotel, entertainment, education and medical facilities, preserving the historical structures and at the same time developing a people-oriented urban design to function as a driving force for stimulating craftsmanship in Seoul.
The strength of the proposal is the subtle integration of the building mass in the surrounding context, the adequate modulation and connection that creates flexible unit combinations to respond to future demands and lasting place making generated through the preservation of historic traces and buildings. Especially, the proposal of the public anchor program in ground and underground floors to enhance and adapt urban industry is highly appreciated.
Process
A jury comprising six experts in the field of urban design and architecture from academia and industry selected KCAP out of eight national and foreign offices as the winning team. The president of the jury, Prof. On Young Tae mentioned that KCAP’s proposal “presented the most suitable strategy for Sewoon District #4 based on excellent understanding of historic and urban conditions of the site.”
KCAP will process the schematic design until December 2017. Construction is planned to start in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023. From 6th till 17th of March, the design entries will be exhibited in the lobby of Seoul’s City hall.

KCAP exhibits station related projects in «Train and the City»
Rotterdam/Zurich, 13 December 2016 – As from tomorrow, KCAP Architects&Planners presents a selection of its station projects in the exhibition «Train and the City» at Architekturforum Zurich, Switzerland.
Since the industrial revolution and the birth of railway transport, cities have developed rapidly around their stations and continue to do so. Today, the arrival of high speed trains, the improvement of transportation and new technologies, brings us to imagine and create new visions for train stations and their surroundings.
«Train and the City» invites you to explore a selection of KCAP’s oeuvre that deals with different aspects of station areas as a driving force for the development of European cities. The starting point for this focus is an article by Kees Christiaanse, called «Europe by Rail» (2013) in which he describes stations in their historical urban context on a train trip from Zurich to Amsterdam.
Beyond the need to build dense and walkable cities around hubs, through its work KCAP considers the impact of new stations on the city, how they mutually develop and how shrinking railway infrastructure offers opportunities for urban development.
In the exhibition, a catalogue of KCAP’s station related projects is combined with a presentation of seven themes and their exemplary projects. These themes are relevant for KCAP’s approach to urban design and for the diverse cultural and political context of our work. A comparative research on the relation between train infrastructure and city growth carried out by students from the University of Liechtenstein offers an additional historical perspective to the exhibition.
The exhibition will be opened tomorrow, Wednesday, December 14th at 7 pm and can be visited until February 11th 2017.

Since its founding in 1989 by Kees Christiaanse, KCAP Architects&Planners has grown to become an leading international office for architecture and urban design, with projects around the world. KCAP’s oeuvre covers a great variety of projects, from large scale urban and landscape interventions to complex inner-city transformations to building designs and interiors.
“Scale is an important theme in our work. We’re not specialists, but we work on all scales – from the planning of the infrastructure to the details of the façade. And this multiplicity of scales is of benefit to the development and analysis of functional programmes and conceptional ideas,” says Kees Christiaanse.

Key projects of KCAP’s portfolio are the residential building Kavel 25 in The Hague, which marks the starting point of KCAP’s career, the GWL site in Amsterdam as the first sustainable housing quarter in The Netherlands and, most recently, the residential tower, The Red Apple, in Rotterdam. Major urban projects are Stadionpark Rotterdam (NL), Olympic Legacy London (UK), Perm Strategic Masterplan (RU) and Hafencity Hamburg (DE), which is currently under construction.
Alongside its activities as architects and planners, KCAP Architects&Planners has always combined professional work with education and research. This has produced successful cross-fertilisations, generated various publications and has gained Kees Christiaanse the position of curator of the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) in 2009.
“We see our task as urban designers and architects as to observe and listen well and to use design as an instrument to create functional, aesthetic and inspiring environments for daily life”, says Kees Christiaanse. “In the past 20 years we have developed specific experiences and skills in creating urban breeding grounds that stimulate social interaction. With the challenges of the Urban Age increasing rather than decreasing KCAP Architects&Planners will keep developing this knowledge to provide answers for the future of cities.”
