Roderick Kemsley, one of the founding partners of studioKAP, will shortly be leaving to take up a senior role in another Glasgow practice. Speaking about his departure, co-founder Christopher Platt said, “Despite projects in the pipeline in Scotland, England and overseas, our workload, like so many of our colleagues’ has decreased. While Rod’s departure is sad, it will help facilitate new collaborations in practice and academia, some of which are ongoing.” Directors Helen Campbell and Christopher Platt will continue to lead the practice. 26 Oct

In expanding the house we wanted to also enrich it in plan and section. Internally this entailed introducing the complexity and depth of interest characteristic in the morphology of a well designed larger house – sequences of related rooms, alternative circulation patterns and additional stairs. Externally it involved developing what we sometimes refer to as a more complex coastline, a more differentiated relationship with garden, approaches, and external space at different levels. 25 Oct

“Our client required to alter and extend an existing Victorian semi-detached dwelling. Unusually formal for a house of this modest scale they required to reconfigure the house with more emphasis on relaxed contemporary living, an enhanced relationship with the garden and improved sequence of external space and entrance”. 17 Oct

Auchoish Steadings
The rural project by Studio KAP was distinguished by three particular factors: very limited budget, very difficult site access and a very small contractor. All had a pervasive influence on the way we designed and built, from the nature of the spaces created through to environmental strategy, materiality and the nature of information exchange on site.

This house featured on Channel 4 TV’s Grand Designs programme and proved quite controversial, mostly due to its uncompromising square shape, not exactly contextual!
