Constructing Agency: AADRL exhibition at Zaha Hadid Gallery, London
In method and practice, the Architectural Association Design Research Lab (AADRL) challenges the orthodoxies of convention in how we discuss, design, fabricate and live within architecture and urbanism today.
Championing an unapologetic belief that design and discourse permeates all aspects of life, architecture is a framework to explore, invent and respond to the challenges of today. It is a process without finality, a pursuit for adaptive and evolutionary means to allow our environments to participate and evolve with us.

This work examines the future of living and culture, proposing design research that examines the means to enable this experimentation. In the spirit of the sculptor Robert Morris, AADRL’s architecture is a continuous work in progress altered daily.

Zaha Hadid Superyacht – 16 Oct 2013
The design concept, launched at the latest exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s work at the David Gill Gallery in London, is based around the sculptural form of a master prototype conceived for a 128m yacht. In addition, the Unique Circle Yachts by Zaha Hadid Architects for Blohm+Voss is a family of five individual 90m yachts that creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully-engineered yacht design.

Oct 25 2012 – ZHA’s installation at the SCI-Arc Gallery represents an “evolution of architectural methodologies related to self-supporting, curved surface geometries”. The show combines parametric design (algorithmic form generation) with research by 20th century designers such as Frei Otto, Felix Candela and Heinz Isler. By integrating form-finding methods, the architect expands upon Frei Otto’s material explorations and creates double curved surfaces through computational simulations : SCI-Arc design installation

Arum Installation
Venice Architecture Biennale 2012, Italy
This year’s Biennale theme ‘Common Ground’ shows how the work of the major protagonists of contemporary architecture – often regarded as independent individual creations – is in fact based on historical lineages of collective research. This is also true of the work of Zaha Hadid Architects. It is well known that the early work was initially inspired by Russian Suprematism.

In our installation and exhibition at the Biennale we want to show that – apart from the dialogue with the work of contemporary competitors that existed all along – our recent work connects to a rather different historical strand of research. The more our design research and work evolved on the basis of algorithmic form generation, the more we learned to appreciate the work of pioneers like Frei Otto who had achieved the most elegant designs on the basis of material-structural form-finding processes.

One particular area of research we would like to explore with our installation is the domain of light – weight shells in combination with tensile structures. We have already designed a number of complex shells as well as some tensile structures. Here, for the first time, we would like to integrate these two worlds. The Arum shell is an installation made from pleated metal. We will surround the installation with the documentation of our research, including key reference projects of the pre-eminent precursors in this line of research.
We will show the work Frei Otto, Felix Candela, Heinz Isler among others and include work by Philippe Block, a young, contemporary researcher of stone compression shells.

The exhibition’s curator, Kenny Schachter describes Hadid’s world-view as one in which ‘art, design, and architecture collapse into one another to reflect an all-encompassing way of life characterised by pushing and pulling the boundaries of aesthetics in every conceivable manner and form. What is so inspiring and intriguing about the astounding output of Zaha Hadid, is the imaginative, inventive and unquenchable expression of curiosity and creativity. Hadid defies pigeonholing in a world increasingly defined by uniformity.’

The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome, Italy and the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games are excellent demonstrations of Hadid’s quest for complex, fluid space. Previous seminal buildings such as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati and the Guangzhou Opera House in China have also been hailed as architecture that transforms our ideas of the future with new spatial concepts and bold, visionary forms.

From their London-based studio, Zaha Hadid Architects adopts the same creative approach with regard to objects such as purses, cutlery, jewellery, decorative objects, or furniture, such as the Zephyr sofa or the Liquid Glacial table. These two pieces, along with a wide selection of works, will comprise the exhibition which suggests ‘a very democratic conception, non-hierarchical in structure’ explains Schachter.

From Frei Otto ZHA learned how the richness, organic coherence and fluidity of the forms and spaces ZHA desire could emerge rationally from an intricate balance of forces. Zaha Hadid Architects expanded Frei Otto’s method to include environmental as well as structural logics, and ZHA moved from material to computational simulations.

Guangzhou Opera House has been awarded ‘Best Public Project’ in Architectural Record magazine’s “Good Design Is Good Business” China Awards 2012. The program honours architects and clients who work together to create projects that demonstrate the power of design to advance the goals of businesses, public agencies, and private organizations.
“The building boom in China has brought with it strikingly innovative and useful designs,” said Cathleen McGuigan, editor-in-chief, Architectural Record. “Today we celebrate the best of these projects, illustrating that beautiful buildings can also be brilliantly practical as well, fusing form and function for the greater good.”

17 Aug 2012 – Dover Street Market commissioned Zaha Hadid to design a site-specific installation to be showcased in their London store during the 2012 Olympic Games. Entitled “Aqua”, the concept references the formal language of Hadid’s renowned London Aquatics Centre.
“Designing for Dover Street Market is an exciting opportunity to install a piece inspired by the fluid geometries of the London Aquatics Centre: a wave of liquid, frozen in time, right in the heart of London” – Zaha Hadid.
The installation will be on display at Dover Street Market for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The new floating staircase maintains the lightness of the gallery space. Each suspended step is articulated as a separate ribbon cast from Ductal®, an ultra-high performance concrete with exceptional structural as well as aesthetic qualities. The tensile strength of Ductal® allows the ribbons to remain relatively thin with each tread cast from a single adjustable mould that was engineered in Italy by Il Cantiere. The floating staircase has been designed to be demountable.

BT ArtBox for ChildLine
29 Jun 2012 – BT ArtBox for ChildLine – ‘Perspicere’ – ZHA has reinterpreted the classic Gilbert Scott telephone box for the BT ArtBox Charity Auction; raising money for ChildLine on their 25th Anniversary. ChildLine has been a trusted friend that any child or young person in the UK can turn to when they need someone there for them – helping over 2.6 million children since 1987.
The Perspicere design engages a dynamism and playfulness with the formal simplicity of this most familiar presence of our urban landscape. The fluidity of Hadid’s architectural sketch combines with the rigid orthogonal precision of the telephone box to reconfigure the viewer’s perception. Curvilinear geometries that continually adapt with the observer’s changing viewpoint invite further exploration to reveal new perspectives.
Perspicere is currently on display at St Pancras International Station, London

Berlin Gallery Weekend:
Fri, Apr 27, 2012, 6-9 pm
Sat + Sun, Apr 28 + 29, 11 am – 7 pm
Weekdays: Tue – Sat 11 am – 6 pm
The Buchmann Galerie is pleased to announce its third exhibition with the architect Zaha Hadid to coincide with Gallery Weekend in Berlin.
The focus of the presentation is on eight Silver Paintings, three Dot Paintings, and the large furniture-sculpture Iceberg and Gyre.
Zaha Hadid became internationally known in the early 1980s for a series of spectacular designs, drawings, and paintings. These early studies were unusual in that they were not simply studies associated with a task but also permitted an open interpretation of the project from various perspectives.
Architecture always exists in the area of tension between 2-D and 3-D, between the translation of drawing into building. Nevertheless, in architecture it is precisely the drawing, the 2-D works, that achieved true innovations, which is why the Silver Paintings and the Dot Paintings are particularly important in this exhibition “Drawing accelerates the evolution of architecture,” as Patrik Schumacher, Senior Office Partner at ZHA Architects, explains.
Zaha Hadid’s Silver Paintings and Dot Paintings express notions of space that are otherwise familiar only from abstract formulas or can only be experienced as tectonic forms. Images are important to the studio’s work because their modulations of colour, gradients of dark to light or pointillist techniques are design means that cause objects to disappear against their background, showing different options on the long path to the built reality.
The graphic forms of the Silver Paintings and Dot-Paintings are translated step by step into tectonic structures. Hadid’s images are representational without being naturalistic, because they do not show physical realities but rather architectural possibilities: Detlef Mertins explains in the catalogue to Hadid’s 2006 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum: “Hadid’s paintings bring mathematical and geological geometries into greater alignment.”
The Iceberg furniture piece, designed for Sawaya & Moroni, is part of a line of formal research that explores the idea of liquid territories. The outstanding and apparent features of this bench are two icicles – like extensions. One is darting into horizontality whereas the other points vertical. Although these two shapes are opposing and contrasting each other there is mediation between them through a diagonal fold that “morphs” one form into the other.
The Gyre chair, from the 2006 Seamless Collection by Zaha Hadid for Established & Sons, is an obvious evolution of the architectural language explored: soft meets sharp, convex and concave, and a sculptural sensibility that impactness on our self-conception. The rhythm of folds, niches, recesses and protrusions follows a coherent formal logic. With the formal dynamic of a fluid mass, Hadid emphasizes the continuous nature of the design and the smooth evolution between otherwise disparate elements.
Zaha Hadid has consistently extended the limits of architecture and the designed space. Her experimentation with new spatial concepts has attracted worldwide attention and her seminal built works include the MAXXI: National Museum of 21st century Arts in Rome and the London Aquatics centre for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Zaha Hadid Architects : “Parametric Tower Research”
Duration of the exhibition: 16 Jan – 8 Mar 2012
Thirty years after the foundation of Zaha Hadid Architects a large number of different and sophisticated projects have been realised all over the world. The intellectual foundation for this has been provided with the remarkable architectural-theoretical work by Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher.
This year, the AIT ArchitekturSalon exclusively features a selection of projects by Zaha Hadid ARCHITECTS. Models, paintings and multimedia presentations illustrate a new high-rise typology – inspired by the concepts and ambitions of parametrism. The opening event takes place on January 18, 2012 with a presentation relating to the exhibition “Parametric Tower Research” by Professor Dr. Patrik Schumacher, Zaha Hadid Architects from London.

Galerie Gmurzynska, Zurich, Switzerland
13 Jun – 25 Sep 2010
Galerie Gmurzynska presents a seminal exhibition curated and designed by Zaha Hadid juxtaposing works of the Russian Avant-Garde with the work of Zaha Hadid Architects. A bright explosion of Russian Works pierces through the contemporary works of Zaha Hadid in a dynamic black and white design. The dialogue of these works constantly shifts and realigns as one moves through the space focusing on four themes: Abstraction, Distortion, Fragmentation, and Floatation. A site specific artwork, the exhibition design is a projection of a 2-dimensional drawing into the 3-dimensional space. The gallery has become a spatial painting in which the threshold of the picture plane has expanded and can be entered.
