Bringing architectural models – and ideas – alive through movement, sound, scent and film, the free Supermodels exhibition opens to the public on Friday 25 November 2022 at Regent Quarter, King’s Cross London N1.
In the eerie setting of a building site awaiting refurbishment, multidisciplinary design and architecture studio Piercy&Company presents a performance of animated models of their buildings and projects – reconnecting our digital and physical worlds through a childlike sense of wonder and delight as their amazing models spring into life.
Resonating with the mysterious allure of miniature objects with lives of their own – think doll’s houses, cuckoo clocks and model railways – Supermodels employs mechanical automata, projection mapping, scent and lighting to create a new, more engaging way of communicating architectural concepts.
Exploring exciting new possibilities for an age-old form of architectural communication, Supermodels distils the studio’s 20 years of research into the sensory and haptic dimensions of architecture. Each model encapsulates the essence of Piercy&Company‘s design approach to building typologies spanning from commercial developments to churches.
The models were handmade by Piercy&Company’s architecture team to explore and test experiential aspects of architecture including the spatial, the tectonic and the tactile.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 11 December 2022.

SUPER-MODELS Postponed
Piercy&Company has taken the decision to postpone its upcoming SUPER-MODELS exhibition, scheduled to run from 26 March – 26 April 2020 due to growing concerns relating to COVID-19.
SUPER-MODELS will showcase six of Piercy&Company’s exquisitely made, mechanised architectural models. As well as to surprise and delight, the objective of the exhibition was to prompt wider discussion and debate around the importance of physical engagement in architecture in terms of process, culture and communication.
The exhibition will be rescheduled for later in the year.

SUPER-MODELS – an exhibition of hand-crafted architectural models from six projects by Piercy & Company in response to the challenge of how to communicate architecture in a way that is joyful, engages people and stimulates the senses. The exhibition will open on Thursday 26 March until 25th April at Cottam House, 36-40 York Way, London.
Unlike traditional architectural models, the SUPER-MODELS are not static – each one moves, lives, breathes and changes, and is a story in its own right, demonstrating a different technique of bringing essential aspects of the project to life in a compelling manner.
Artistic but accessible expressions of their built intent, the purpose of bringing the models together is to prompt wider discussion and debate about the importance of physical engagement in architecture in terms of process, culture and communication.
Stuart Piercy, Piercy & Company founder who also sits on the Camden and Islington design review panels and teaches architecture at The University of Westminster said: “Design through a process of physical making is central to our philosophy.
“Architecture today is designed almost exclusively within a digital environment. This can lead to a remoteness from the haptic qualities of materials, weight, texture and smell.
Models reconnect the digital and physical worlds and capture a childlike sense of wonder in almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Tactile and spatial, they engage the senses and invite you to pick them up and explore. Models can come alive and tell their own stories – through magical mechanisms, sound, smell and film – we hope people will delight in their miniature worlds.”
The inspiration for Piercy & Company model making comes from the world of art rathe
than architecture – from the mesmerising, illusionary boxes of Charles Matton to the whimsical, intriguing automata of Arthur Ganson, special monolithic qualities of Eduardo Chillida and Rachel Whitereads sculpture to the eccentric genius of Theo Janson and Jean Tinguely. The extraordinary expression in each of their works swings from powerful to playful, charming to idiosyncratic in a moment.
SUPER-MODELS will be on tour across the UK – dates and venues to be announced alongside a talks programme for the duration of its London show.

Martello Tower Y
Martello Tower Y in Suffolk is one of 103 artillery towers, built from 1805 at vulnerable points around the south and east coasts to resist Napoleonic invasion. It presents perhaps the ultimate challenge to the housing architect – the issues are manifold.
The architects’ sensitive response is typified by the beauty of the exposed domed brickwork and the indoor-outdoor roof terrace which is oversailed but not enclosed, leaving a third of the roof area open to the considerable elements and providing views across the Suffolk levels and the sea.
