O-14 tower : 22 storeys, commercial tower
O-14 is a twenty-two storey tall commercial tower perched on a two-storey podium in the heart of Dubai’s Business Bay. O-14 comprises 300,000 square feet and is a collaboration between RUR Architecture of New York and the Creek Side Development Company of Dubai. O-14 is located along the extension of Dubai Creek, occupying a prominent location on the waterfront esplanade.
The design of O-14 fundamentally shifts away from the architectural norm in current Dubai towers by eliminating the now obligatory curtain wall and above ground parking in favor of a shade-producing, concrete load-bearing shell and an open public space at the tower base achieved by moving the parking below ground.

REISER + UMEMOTO, FIRM PROFILE
Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto have practiced in New York City as Reiser + Umemoto, RUR Architecture P.C. since 1986. Jesse Reiser is currently an Associate Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. Nanako Umemoto is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and leads a yearly design workshop at Hong Kong University. Reiser + Umemoto, RUR Architecture P.C., an internationally recognized architectural firm, has built projects at a wide range of scales: from furniture design, to residential and commercial structures, up to the scale of landscape design and infrastructure.
RUR approaches each project as the continuation of an ongoing inquiry, delving into relationships among architecture, territory and systems of distribution. By working on projects of varying scales, from the architectural to the regional, RUR has developed flexible strategies and techniques that seek to open structures that are now ossified and to integrate domains that historically have been kept apart.
Jesse Reiser received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Cooper Union in New York and completed his Masters of Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and in 1985, was appointed as a fellow of the American Academy in Rome.
Architect and Landscape Architect Nanako Umemoto graduated from Cooper Union following her studies at the School of Urban Design at the Osaka University of Art. In addition to teaching together at Columbia University, Reiser and Umemoto have individually taught and lectured at various educational and cultural institutions throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and their work has been widely published and exhibited for over 20 years.
RUR was awarded the Chrysler Award for Excellence in Design in 1999, the Academy Award in Architecture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000, and in May 2008, Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto were awarded the Presidential Citation from President George Campbell of the Cooper Union for outstanding practical and theoretical contributions to the field of Architecture.

NEW YORK – On May 28th 2008, Jesse Reiser and his partner Nanako Umemoto will receive the Cooper Union Presidential Citation from President George Campbell for outstanding practical and theoretical contributions to the field of architecture.
Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto graduated from the Cooper Union in 1981 and 1983 respectively and began their partnership in 1985. Their innovative design work at RUR, which embraced a range of scales from residential to regional, is widely recognized internationally.
Reiser + Umemoto gained considerable international attention last year when they were awarded first place honors during the international jury phase of the Shenzhen Airport Competition. Other competing firms included Lord Norman Foster, Foreign Office Architects, Kisho Kurokowa, and Massimiliano Fuksas. Reiser + Umemoto’s cutting edge concrete shell design, a radical shift away from airport ‘Hi-Tech,’ ultimately proved too challenging to the local Chinese jury, but nevertheless confirmed Reiser + Umemoto’s status as leading practitioners in the field of architecture, thus contributing to the decision for their presidential citation.

RUR Architecture also recently won first prize in the International Competition for the design of the Alishan Tourist Infrastructure in Taiwan, People’s Republic of China, which is due to begin construction in the coming year.
Currently, Reiser + Umemoto’s ‘Green Tower’ O-14 is under construction in Dubai. The building broke ground in February 2007.
In addition, Reiser + Umemoto are currently producing a prototype wall for the MoMA New York Home Delivery exhibition, scheduled to open in July 2008.
Reiser + Umemoto Book
A comprehensive monograph of Reiser + Umemoto’s architectural design work, projects and their consequences, is currently in production and was scheduled for publication by the Spanish publisher Actar in 2009. Their book Atlas of Novel Tectonics was released by Princeton Architectural Press in March 2006 supported by grants from the New York State Council of the Arts as well as from the Graham Foundation.
The RUR Architecture book which is now in its fourth printing has consistently been on the Amazon.com Bestseller List for the past two years, and was the recipient of the 2007 Gutenberg Prize from the Bundesamt fur Kultur in Bern.
