Monolab – Talk

Monolab keynote lecture

1 Apr 2011
AIAS Quad Conference at SIUC, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA

Lecturer: Jan Willem van Kuilenburg, of this Rotterdam architecture office

This contemporary Dutch architects office is a practice for advanced design based research in urbanism and architecture, founded in 1999. Simplicity (mono) is linked to experiment (lab).

The lecture will address the architect office’s concern to generate projects through three parameters: density, interlace and parallelism. Along with these issues Jan Willem will focus on aspects from disciplines outside of architecture as inspirers and carriers of research and design within Monolab design processes.

…We are living in an era of interlace. In our present society, life patterns have become increasingly dynamic. Living, working and leisure are blended more and more. This requires a flexibility from everything and everybody that can be generated and fully powered by density, fusion and parallelism as the architecture office’s design instruments: Density is bringing together programs in concentrated layouts. Fusion or interlace is the co-operation and/or merging of previously separated programs. Parallelism is the accessibility to several programs at the same moment in the same place…

ir J.W. (Jan Willem) van Kuilenburg
Principal of this architecture office. Head of final projects at the Fontys Academy of Architecture and Urbanism in Tilburg. Member advisory committee contribution program architecture and research and design Program, The Netherlands Architecture Fund, Rotterdam.

Later he worked at: NS-architects in Utrecht (renamed Holland Railconsult, now StudioSK), KAW-architects in Groningen and the Architect association (renamed AA architecten) in The Hague. He taught at Delft Technical University and the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urbanism and currently teaches at the Fontys Academy of Architecture and Urbanism in Tilburg and is regularly lecturing in the Netherlands and abroad.
