Monolab – Talk
Monolab keynote lecture
1 Apr 2011
AIAS Quad Conference at SIUC, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA
Lecture title: EMBEDDED ARCHITECTURE
Lecturer: Jan Willem van Kuilenburg, of this Rotterdam architecture office
This contemporary Dutch architects office is a practice for advanced design based research in urbanism and architecture, founded in 1999. Simplicity (mono) is linked to experiment (lab).
The lecture will address the architect office’s concern to generate projects through three parameters: density, interlace and parallelism. Along with these issues Jan Willem will focus on aspects from disciplines outside of architecture as inspirers and carriers of research and design within Monolab design processes.
…We are living in an era of interlace. In our present society, life patterns have become increasingly dynamic. Living, working and leisure are blended more and more. This requires a flexibility from everything and everybody that can be generated and fully powered by density, fusion and parallelism as the architecture office’s design instruments: Density is bringing together programs in concentrated layouts. Fusion or interlace is the co-operation and/or merging of previously separated programs. Parallelism is the accessibility to several programs at the same moment in the same place…
