Strong start to 2013 for New Practice, Richard Morton Architects

Richard Morton Architects has secured planning for three diverse projects: a 60 bed care home for Frontier in Hersden near Canterbury, a luxury penthouse extension in Paddington and a rooftop boardroom and chairman’s suite for Foresight House in the City of London.

The practice was set up in November 2012 by Richard Morton, previously a partner at Sidell Gibson Architects for 12 years, “Starting a new practice, however experienced and strong the team, is quite an adventure. So to have achieved such a positive start for 2013 is very heartening, especially as the projects are so diverse in their scale and sectors. We have several more projects in the pipeline, and are feeling very hopeful for the coming year.”

The 30,000sqft care home, occupying a sensitive corner site on the A28, includes a three storey tower as a pivotal element in the design and completes a residential development which was left unfinished five years ago. Protected by the wings of the L shaped layout is an extensive and well sheltered garden area. The home is intended to achieve a BREEAM rating of Very Good.

The penthouse consent is for an addition of 1000sqft to the existing Sheldon Square apartment, including a stunning roof top swimming pool. The permission was achieved against strong opposition from Westminster planning officers who wished to enforce policy restricting rooftop extensions.

Foresight House is the latest in a series of ‘difficult’ City sites, six in all, where Richard Morton has successfully gained planning permission. Other projects in the sequence include Sir John Lyon house near the Millennium Bridge and One Bartholomew Lane opposite the Bank of England. Foresight, who own the Arthur Street building and occupy the top two floors, are a multinational shipping business and need a state-of-the-art chairman’s suite. As part of the refurbishment and extension of the building, Richard Morton created a contemporary suite on the 6th floor with a stunning new glass roofed boardroom. The work will also include the complete upgrading of the entrance and the renewal of the air conditioning system. Work is due to start on site later this year.
