HKR Architects strengthens its team with appointment of new Director

Leading international architecture and design practice, HKR Architects has appointed Elias Niazi as Director.

Elias’s appointment comes on the back of a number of significant residential-led project wins in 2017 and continued expansion of the company going forward in 2018.

Elias worked for 18 years as Design Principal at Aukett Swanke and prior to that for five years at HOK San Francisco as Project Designer. His portfolio includes large-scale complex mixed-use projects involving urban master planning along with award-winning higher education buildings. Elias brings a unique mix of entrepreneurial spirit, strategic thinking and strong design leadership with a highly collaborative working style.

HKR Architects returns to Dublin market

24th of January 2018 – International architecture and design practice, HKR Architects has returned to its roots in Dublin by opening a new office at 31 Lower Leeson Street, D2. The move comes on the back of a number of new appointments in the City for the company.

Jerry Ryan, Director of HKR Architects comments, “We are delighted to be returning to Dublin and establishing a base once again. The office has been opened to service our existing work in Dublin and to explore new opportunities in the Capital. Our principal design hub in London continues to service our clients in the UK and internationally.

“I am also delighted to welcome Karen Hammond back to our Dublin office. Karen has been working for HKR over the past few years on several large-scale projects in the Middle East and brings a wealth of experience to the Irish market.”

HKR Architects appointed to design £73 million regeneration of Bexley housing estate

July 2017 – International architectural practice, HKR Architects has been appointed by Orbit and Wates Residential to masterplan and design a proposed £73 million regeneration scheme in Bexley, London.

The scheme is the redevelopment of Arthur Street estate, which was built in the late 1960s and consists of three 13 storey tower blocks and a number of low rise blocks, providing 263 one and two bedroom flats with some three bedroom maisonettes. Despite substantial investment since the transfer from the London Borough of Bexley in 1998, many components are now failing and the blocks no longer meet modern standards.

The proposed new scheme will feature around 280 new homes, of which 80% will be for affordable rent and shared ownership with associated parking and public open space.

Maggie McCann, development director at Orbit, said: “We want the Arthur Street estate to be a great place to live now and for future generations. The regeneration of Arthur Street looks beyond bricks and mortar and will encourage an inclusive community for people who wish to work in London and live in a neighbourly community. We are delighted that HKR Architects will be working with us on the scheme.”

Orbit’s plans for the regeneration of Arthur Street, are also set to benefit from over £10 million awarded through the government’s Estate Regeneration Fund and the Greater London Authority’s Affordable Homes Programme.

Director Geoff Brocklehurst added: “We are absolutely delighted to be appointed by Orbit and Wates Group. The regeneration of this estate is extremely important for Erith and will symbolise the continued commitment to transform local neighbourhoods into better and safer places which people are proud to live in.”

In the coming months, Orbit and Wates will consult with the local community before submitting a planning application to London Borough of Bexley in summer 2018.

HKR Architects appointed to design significant mixed use development at Nyes Wharf, Southwalk

16th January 2017: Leading International architecture and design practice, HKR Architects has been appointed by Hinkcroft Ltd to design a significant residential led, mixed used development at Nyes Wharf in the London Borough of Southwark.

The proposals will include the provision of up to 200 new homes and around 15,000 sq. ft. of employment generation space, parking and associated landscaping.

HKR’s approach to masterplanning and urban design focuses on creating environments where people can live and work in a safe, integrated community.”

Nyes Wharf is part of a larger composite 13 hectare site masterplan known as OKR14. The Old Kent Road is designated as an Opportunity Area in the London Plan because of its significant capacity for new development. Over the next twenty years, the Opportunity Area will be transformed, increasingly becoming a part of central London.
The site being developed in conjunction with Southwark Council’s draft Area Action Plan which seeks to deliver more than 20,000 new homes over the next 20 years. There is also the potential delivery of two new Bakerloo line stations.

UK Architecture Practice HKR Architects reaches final for International Design Competition

6th January 2017: Leading architecture and design practice, HKR Architects, credited as the only UK architectural firm to be a finalist in an open International Design Competition for DEWA’s new office headquarters in Dubai.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) competition brief was to prepare a design for a building of International standing to meet the needs of its various departmental stakeholders within an over-arching principle of delivering a net Zero Energy Building.

HKR’s initial response was to challenge DEWA’s own brief on overall size of development and the hierarchical needs of the business to deliver a ‘smarter’ building. HKR’s initial questioning sought to reduce the building volume by 30% by reducing the associated area of work space per person down to a more standard BCO provision, thus reducing significantly both capital cost at the outset and annual running costs – a smaller building is more efficient to build and manage.

The practice also examined inter-departmental connectivity and associated building uses with the aim to ‘compartmentalise’ the building by department and activity to ensure functionality was not compromised during ‘compression’ of the brief. In addition to this proposed spatial reduction to the brief, the design also incorporated the ability to ‘shut down’ large sections of the total building during significant parts of the working week to further reduce overall energy consumption, principally in the form of cooling.

The final submission comprised an impressive atrium office building delivering a genuine sense of arrival and prime connectivity to key departments with inter-linked building elements to accommodate ancillary activities such as public auditoria, conferencing, health and fitness facilities and staff well-being. This commercially astute approach to design also incorporated best practise basics – office spaces which are flexible and sub-divisible to ensure the building has the adaptability to meet the future needs of the owners or any subsequent tenancy.

We are delighted the design was short-listed against some of the most well-known and influential architectural businesses across the globe.”

HKR’s design also focused on introducing high quality public realm, social space and a strong element of genuine place-making to the development, attributes often found lacking in large developments within cities undergoing ‘artificially’ accelerated growth.
