Circulation through the property extends directly from the site and continues internally as a central spine leading towards the master wing. This organising element structures movement throughout the home while reinforcing clear visual and spatial connections between key areas.
The residence’s “meditation hallway” is defined by a wall of full-height glazing along one side, allowing natural light and views to accompany the journey through the space, while the opposite wall is dedicated to the display of artwork, creating a calm and contemplative transitional experience.

While both structures were fully rebuilt, their original footprints were carefully preserved, maintaining the scale and siting of the former buildings within the forested setting.

Situated on a parklike site in a northern Detroit suburb, with the River Rouge meandering through it, the 4,000-square-foot Lakeside House takes a Y-shaped form that opens onto an elaborate landscape the homeowner has cultivated for over 40 years. A former curator of Asian art and gallery owner, she sought to integrate her distinctive collection of handcrafted objects into the home, which is also inspired by her family’s heritage in the lumber industry.
