Castle Hill Residence, Texas

This client came to us wanting to make a change from the larger, more spread-out family home to a more compact, urban abode. The Castle Hill House is located in the historic Castle Hill neighborhood and is situated directly next to the castle itself, so our goal became to design a home that fits into the constantly evolving building fabric of this very sought-after area in Austin. Responding to the existing historic homes, the materials of warm limestone, light stucco, and wrought-iron-inspired metal accents echoed the color palette of the surrounding structures.

The house’s footprint is compact, with three stories of spaces stacked up to maximize yard and open space below, but also captures downtown views above with the open-air decks situated on every level. We carefully edited to integrate previous collections and pieces, incorporating color and fun with a backdrop of timeless neutrals. The result is a thoughtful, modern home that is unique to the client’s style and feels inviting on every level.

Who are the clients and what’s interesting about them?
A couple making a big change from the larger, more spread-out family home to compact, urban loft-type living.

What were some key design decisions?
Guest spaces on the lowest level, with a gracious and welcoming entry. Main living spaces on the middle level, and primary suite on the third level, with a roof deck on top of it all. There is an entry courtyard which does a wonderful job of creating a private front yard threshold but also presents a welcoming and friently appearance to the neighborhood approach from the street. There is an open-air deck on every level – covered grill patio on ground floor facing backyard, lounge patio on the 2nd floor facing Capitol view, private patio facing Castle views on the 3rd floor, and roof deck on the top level overlooking everything. Careful attention to solar orientation – protecting from harsh western sun while opening up to views as much as possible.

What were the main wishes of the client in terms of how they wanted the house to look?
Thougthful. Modern, but not slick or monotone. The trellis over the street-facing garage doors was the client’s idea, which will soften up the front facade considerably once the vines have filled in to cover it. Bookcases are a big element of the living spaces, to display their large collection of books.

What were some key interior design decisions?
The clients had a large collection of rugs, art, accessories and furniture from their prior home, which they had to downsize for this contemporary, urban townhome. We worked with them on which pieces to keep so that they knew what to let go of and what to temporarily store until the house was ready. From an interiors perspective, the clients wanted their new home to reflect their love of Mexico, and to incorporate their much-loved pieces of art and collectibles acquired while traveling in the region. Their main priority was to make sure their new modern home would be warm and inviting. From hence came the “Mexican Modern” inspiration. Wood floors were used along with creamy whites and black, wrought-iron inspired fittings, fixtures and hardware. Subtle textures and color were introduced through the tile selections and fabrics on the furniture, and paint finishes were inspired by the natural hues in the stone.
