Avalanche Chalet, USA
Within this elegant two-bedroom ski chalet, bold Farmer Payne architectural concepts meet progressive engineering, aesthetics, and function. The Avalanche Chalet home was designed to highlight the views toward Bald Mountain, ID, while the structure is capable of carrying the force of an avalanche.
Built into the adjacent bedrock, the cantilevered roof allows for full viewing of the surrounding areas and maximizes natural light with floor-to-ceiling glass lift and sliding doors. Farmer Payne Architects in Sun Valley chose board formed concrete both inside and out to create a sense of cohesion and provide multiple outdoor living spaces.
In collaboration with Jennifer Hoey Interior Design, the interior echoes a modest approach with an emphasis on clean details and natural materials. Tucked safely into the hillside and relating to the natural landscape, this sun valley architectural masterpiece provides an open-living oasis for the homeowners to entertain, enjoy, and embrace their mountain retreat.
What were the key challenges?
The house was situated on a smaller lot with steep slopes situated in an avalanche zone, and strict city requirements. We were tasked with designing a house design that could meet all the requirements but still be designed well.
The house was also built during the 2020 pandemic. Navigating unknown territory and uncertain circumstances further fostered a culture of collaboration, as we leaned on our team to see the success of the project. Ultimately, the success culminated in an AIA Idaho award.
What were the solutions?
Overcoming the challenges of the project required the dedication and collaborative efforts of an incredible and cohesive team.
As the inaugural project for our Sun Valley studio, it not only showcased our ability to tackle difficult terrain, but also fostered strong relationships in our community. Every team member crafted creative solutions through their deep understanding and knowledge of their craft.
