Elk Edge Retreat is a contemporary ranch retreat set within the rolling hills of Somervell County, Texas. Designed by Jeff Garnett Architect, the residence responds to a landscape defined by expansive skies, distant water, native elk, and dramatic sunsets.
The architecture is organized around a continuous connection between interior and exterior. Expansive glazing, deep covered porches, and carefully aligned sightlines frame views across the ranch, while native limestone walls extend seamlessly from inside to out.
From the moment of arrival, views through the home establish the landscape as a central part of the architectural experience.
A restrained material palette of native limestone, charred wood, exposed timber, blackened steel, and board-formed concrete gives the retreat a tactile and enduring character. The great room forms the heart of the home, anchored by a board-formed concrete fireplace, while a second fireplace extends the primary living axis onto the covered porch.
Guest accommodations and the primary suite occupy separate wings, providing privacy while maintaining strong connections to shared spaces and the outdoors. Throughout, Elk Edge Retreat demonstrates an approach to contemporary Texas ranch architecture rooted in restraint, craftsmanship, and respect for place, allowing the architecture to frame the landscape rather than compete with it.

From the beginning, Elk Edge Retreat was conceived as a way to experience the landscape rather than as an object that would dominate it. That idea influenced the building’s orientation, scale, material palette, and the placement of openings. The architecture remains restrained so that attention is continually drawn outward to the land.
Framed views are one of the clearest expressions of this approach. Openings are positioned to create deliberate relationships with the surrounding terrain, allowing different parts of the landscape to become part of the experience as you move through the retreat. Rather than relying on expanses of glass everywhere, views are edited and composed by the architecture.
The use of limestone and charred wood also reinforces this philosophy. Both materials give the buildings a quiet, tactile presence and allow them to sit comfortably within the natural tones and textures of the site. Simple forms and a limited material palette further reduce the visual complexity of the architecture.
Ultimately, the project is less about creating a singular architectural statement and more about establishing a series of relationships between building, material, light, and land. The architecture provides the frame, but the landscape remains the focus.
