Carmel Valley Residence
This house is located in the Santa Lucia Preserve, an old coastal branch to the southwest of Carmel Valley. Master-planned for houses surrounded by open space, each parcel has a strict building envelope in order to preserve the natural habitat and native landscape. The client wanted to create a family gathering place that recaptured some of the feeling of a beloved Adirondacks house and incorporated log construction. The family’s parcel sits just above a historic hacienda and barns, with open grassland below and an oak forest behind the site.
Turnbull Griffin Haesloop took advantage of this landscape transition by breaking the house into a series of buildings that address the different landscape contexts and use the topography of the hill to create a dramatic exterior link. The house uses outdoor spaces to highlight the varied qualities of the site. The main building opens out with a broad front porch facing the equestrian center and valley below. The kitchen opens onto a grove of oaks, providing shaded outdoor space. The secluded bedroom cabins climb up the hill into the trees, with an exterior link to the main house.
In keeping with the values of the preserve, the house incorporates many sustainable design features. The main exterior walls are constructed of sprayed earth, using soil from the site. The mass of the sprayed earth walls in combination with strategically placed operable windows allows the house to be naturally cooled, eliminating the need for air conditioning. The siding and decking, both exterior and interior, is FSC-certified. The floors and beams are reclaimed wood and the insulation is recycled cotton. The zinc roof, glass tiles, and concrete counters come from long-lasting sources with high-recycled content.
The house – in terms of planning, construction and materials – is designed to weave the qualities of the site into the daily experience of living there.
