Sapphire Cabin, North Carolina – US Residence
Rusafova-Markulis Architects were hired by a young couple with 2 children to design a mountain modern cabin for their family in Sapphire NC inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics.
The clients wanted a simple vacation home – a modest yet comfortable base where they can rest, adventure and spend time with their parents who have a property in the same community.
The 5 acre lot was unusual as it was split in two by a long logging road following the ridge of the parcel. The clients embraced our vision for two pavilions arranged perpendicularly to each other creating a cozy inner courtyard.
The building frames by the existing logging road and establishes a strong feeling of a place by celebrating this distinct feature of the site.
On one side of the framed opening is the garage which doubles as an office, place to tinker with projects or play and on the other is the kids’ room and the open kitchen and living room that connect to the exterior with covered decks facing the mountain views.
The pavilion parallel to the road houses the main bedroom, the bathroom and the entry space which face east and are tucked away from the busy heart of this compact home.
We opted for a paired down palette of vertical rough-sawn pine boards on the exterior stained black, tongue and groove pine ceilings, maple plywood cabinetry and built-ins on the and polished concrete floors.
