EFA Architect, located in Long Beach, Washington, is proud to announce the completion of the highly anticipated Snow Peak Long Beach Campfield. The locally based, family-owned firm was tasked with facilitating and overseeing all efforts surrounding Snow Peak Long Beach Campfield starting in 2020, from wetland mitigation, program development and architectural design to construction execution, with the property’s grand opening in June 2024.
Design Inspiration
Erik and Scott Fagerland, the father-son team behind EFA Architect, took inspiration for the Campfield from their decades of personal time spent living, working, and recreating in the Pacific Northwest. The notion of sharing the regional climate by gathering communally outdoors with Snow Peak equipment was central to each of their designs.
“Snow Peak’s established brand identity influenced the overall aesthetic early on, but it wasn’t until we incorporated environmental factors, and our own minimalist design sensibilities that the buildings truly took shape. We like to think of each building as an indoor/outdoor pavilion that functions as an extension of the Campfield experience,” said Erik Fagerland, owner and architect.
Designs were focused on Snow Peak’s values and aesthetics, with an emphasis on a new type of high-end camping experience in the country. EFA studied examples from Snow Peak Japan’s Campfields, looking at contemporary ways to interact with the natural surroundings. “We focused on using local, natural materials to make spaces feel comfortable, as well as implementing large openings and expanses of glass to bring the outdoors in,” said Fagerland.
Encompassing 25 acres, Snow Peak’s Long Beach Campfield includes many design elements that set themselves apart from any other campground in the country, such as the property’s cold plunge, sauna, and soaking pool in the Ofuro Spa, as well as a café and taproom at the Campstore building.
With an eye for design that closely matches Snow Peak’s ethos, the EFA team historically pulls inspiration from Scandinavian design, finding its simplicity and innate order similar to Japanese architecture in their expression of materials and structure.
From Design To Construction
EFA designed four main outposts that guests see and use throughout their stay, including the Gatehouse that welcomes guests at the entrance to the grounds, Campstore (a social hub for campers and day guests), along with the outdoor Wash House and Ofuro Spa, modeled after traditional Japanese onsens. In keeping with Snow Peak’s aesthetic, each building is clad in dark, shou sugi ban Japanese cypress, contrasted with natural wood interiors and exposed beams.
- Gatehouse:
A massive roof overhangs both a large outdoor patio and entry offices and guests are invited into a glass entry lined with natural hemlock. After check-in, the guest journey begins by walking under a covered boardwalk supported by rhythmically placed wood columns, emulating the sense of passing through trees.
- Campstore:
The Campstore creates a sense of warmth and shelter, providing refuge inside the timber framed structure. A large expanse of glass gently frames the picturesque wetland while timber columns inside and out continue to repeat the rhythm of the surrounding evergreen forest. A wood burning fireplace sits in the corner of the vaulted, airy space with clerestory windows that invite plenty of southern light indoors.
- Wash House:
The minimalist outdoor wash house includes a colonnade of timber visual screening. A simple, heavy Japanese inspired roof is book ended with board form concrete walls while concrete walls provide the backsplash for outdoor sinks. A dark Japanese cypress exterior contrasts a natural, blonde core.
- Ofuro Spa:
The open-air spa, a stunning feature for all to see and experience, is simple in design with a floating roof over the outdoor pool and spa, made entirely of hemlock and fir. Upon entrance into the spa, guests are met with panoramic views framed effortlessly by low-pitched gables and angled columns drawing the eye further into the natural landscape to recall the nearby stand of alder along the bank. The hemlock and tongue and groove interior lining give a “golden” hue paired against the dark Japanese cypress exterior proving the Ofuro Spa is tranquility at its finest.
