At the end of a quiet road near Sun Valley, Greenhorn Cabin is carefully set into a hillside where aspens and a seasonal creek shape both the approach and the design. The home reflects material honesty and a deep connection to the land.

As one of the last untouched parcels in the area, the steep north-facing site set clear parameters for the design. The architecture is carved into the slope as three distinct volumes, allowing the home to follow the land’s natural contours and preserve views of Greenhorn Gulch, Seattle Ridge, and Mahoney Butte. The stone lower level is partially set into the slope, supporting the upper floor and shaping a series of outdoor terraces above, while enhancing views and open living.

A large pivot door marks the entry, where guests can move toward the guest wing or ascend to the primary living spaces. The main level includes the kitchen, dining area, wet bar, office, and primary suite, all oriented to capture mountain views and natural light. The kitchen opens seamlessly to an uncovered outdoor terrace, ideal for clients who love entertaining and casual outdoor living.

Unconventionally, the design introduces a central mass that separates the dining area from the living room, creating distinct yet connected spaces. The living room opens to a covered terrace with an outdoor stone fireplace, extending the use of the home across seasons.

Throughout the interior, every decision reflects a desire to connect the home to its surroundings. White oak floors, Querkus cabinetry, reclaimed timber beams, and steel detailing bring warmth and subtle sophistication. The kitchen features a steel-wrapped island with an inset stone top and flush-mounted Gaggenau cooktop, combining craftsmanship with functionality.

In the living room, a cantilevered concrete hearth extends seamlessly to the terrace outside. Light fixtures throughout the home are treated as jewelry, while a soft palette of forest greens and natural textures draws inspiration from surrounding trees.

Outdoor living is central to the home’s design. With limited direct sunlight, the open terrace off the kitchen captures the sun, while the covered terrace off the living room offers shade and shelter. A narrow, grated bridge links the two terraces, greatly expanding the outdoor circulation, while seamlessly connecting the outdoor spaces.

A split hot tub and pool is discreetly tucked into the hillside near the covered terrace and primary suite. Designed for year-round mountain living, the home incorporates radiant floors, solar panels, and passive solar orientation.
