Hidden Lakes Residence, Michigan, USA

The Hidden Lakes Residence is a modern luxury home nestled on a sloping, wooded site next to a private golf course. The client, owner of a major window company and avid golfer, tasked the design team with creating an “extraordinary home” with abundant windows adjacent to his home course.

Upon visiting the site, the team was inspired by its gentle slope, perfect for a structure that elegantly disengages from the ground plane as it extends southward. This allowed the home’s public spaces – living, dining, and kitchen – to lift above the terrain, forming a glass box that floats among the trees.

Extending along the 17th fairway, it offers sweeping views of the golf course and the southern ravine and wetland below, anchored by a striking concrete fireplace. Beneath this glass volume lives a covered outdoor area, enhancing the connection to nature.

Entry through a large pivoting door draws guests toward the floating living room, where expansive glazing frames dramatic views of the ravine beyond. A gallery lined with fluted wood paneling guides movement toward the main living areas, while a series of transitions, via stairs and circulation, leads westward and downward to the home’s private zones.

Thoughtful spatial planning separates public and private zones, offering a lasting sense of refuge for some spaces, including bedrooms, while maintaining strong visual and physical connections to the outdoors and golf course.

Solar orientation played a pivotal role in siting the pool and glazing, maximizing daylight while managing thermal gain, an approach that contributes to long-term energy performance and comfort.

A standout feature of the home is the multi-use Car Salon, which combines function and lifestyle: part home office, part lounge, and part gallery; all reflecting a tailored response to the client’s passions.

Over time, the home offers enduring benefits: emotional and experiential richness through constant engagement with its surroundings, adaptability through flexible program elements, and lasting architectural clarity—making it not just a residence, but a deeply personal and responsive living environment
