Wake Robin House, WA
This residence is deeply informed by its surroundings, taking full advantage of an open meadow encircled by mature evergreen trees. The home is carefully positioned at the northern edge of the meadow, allowing for abundant southern light to flood the pavilion-style main living space, creating a warm, inviting environment. A thoughtfully designed driveway winds through the trees along the western edge of the property, subtly concealing both the house and meadow from view until guests reach the entry area. This approach creates a sense of surprise and discovery upon arrival, enhancing the overall experience of the site.
The landscape design was a true collaboration between the client, who brought significant landscape expertise, and a professional team of landscape architects and garden designers. Together, they crafted a verdant, dynamic landscape that seamlessly integrates with the house, creating an intimate connection between the built and natural environments. The result is a lush, vibrant setting that not only enhances the home’s aesthetic but also creates a dynamic, interior court space that feels alive and engaging.
A singular, tapered roof elegantly unites the residence, carriage house, and sauna, extending over the entry promenade to provide a covered outdoor space. The layout of the home itself is divided into two distinct parts: a linear “back bar” that houses the master suite, studio, and utilities, and a more open, glass-walled pavilion-style living area that opens out to the meadow on three sides. The roof extends beyond the living space to shelter expansive outdoor patios, which are designed to blend into the surrounding landscape with linear concrete elements that are softened by interspersed plantings. This linear design is mirrored inside the home, with the same pattern appearing in the wood ceilings and extending outdoors through slender, integrated LED fixtures.
In the entryway, a series of water jet-cut metal panels with a custom-designed pattern inspired by the wake robin flower—after which the project is named—defines the walkway. This pattern, abstracted into a geometric design, changes in opacity along the path, offering both privacy and openness where needed. It reappears in subtle details like the master bedroom headboard, tying the overall experience together through thoughtful siting, landscaping, and fine detailing.
