The Cerrado is one of Brazil’s seven biomes, spanning an area of 1.5 million km². It harbors approximately one-third of the country’s biodiversity and 5% of the world’s flora and fauna. The region is also crucial for water resources, as it contains the headwaters of Brazil’s three largest hydrographic basins: the Amazon, São Francisco, and Paraná/Paraguay.

Bordering an environmentally protected area at the back, the residence is shaped by two key priorities—one environmental, the other human. On one hand, it responds to the site’s uneven topography, a common feature of the city; on the other, it embraces the contemplative value offered by the preserved vegetation at the most private edge of the lot.

House 4.16.3 is located in Erechim, a city in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian state about 400 km from the capital, Porto Alegre. The region experiences a subtropical climate, with warm, humid summers and cold, rainy winters—conditions that present an additional challenge for the architect in terms of ensuring year-round habitability.
