Modern house in Angra dos Reis, Rio, Brazil
With essential and sustainable architecture, a house in Rio de Janeiro offers a sensory retreat.
Located on the banks of a canal in one of the most exclusive tropical destinations in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this house in Angra dos Reis was designed for a couple seeking to reconcile distinct references — countryside and beach — and who found in the city the ideal topography and vegetation.
The presence of the mountain and a canal guided the openings, flows, and positioning of the construction, characterized by an austere yet welcoming minimalism.
The house was designed from the ground up, with architecture by Pedro Sunyé and interiors by Gabriela Casagrande. The proposal follows an essentialist approach, defined by few gestures and many silences. A rational structure and minimalist language were chosen to enhance the feeling of warmth, fluidity, and connection with nature.
The central element of the project, which also served as the conceptual starting point, is an 80-meter-long continuous wall made of pressed bamboo. More than an aesthetic feature, it organizes circulation, connects the spaces, and stands as a structural and poetic gesture. By concealing service areas, housing built-in panels, and reinforcing the linearity of the house, this wall functions as a visual, structural, and symbolic axis.
The entrance is located on the side of the house, following the path defined by the bamboo wall, which guides residents from the social area to the bedrooms, located on a higher level of the site. The main spaces — living room, kitchen, and dining area — are fully integrated, with retractable glass doors and stone flooring that extend the visual continuity and blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. In the private areas, natural materials such as light wood and marble prevail, paired with indirect lighting designed to create cozy and sensorial atmospheres.
In the master bathroom, a monolithic bathtub carved from the same marble used on the floors and walls creates a setting of immersion and well-being, enhanced by skylights that allow natural light to filter in throughout the day.
Artificial lighting was designed to be discreet and strategic. Recessed, diffuse, and accent lighting highlights textures and volumes without excess. Linear LED strips on the steps and indirect lighting throughout the interiors emphasize the contemplative atmosphere of the home.
Built-in joinery and slatted panels that blend into the bamboo wall reinforce the visual cohesion of the project and its pursuit of timelessness. The landscaping, also developed by the studio, features low-maintenance tropical species that integrate with the region’s native vegetation. The plants follow the linear path of the main wall, intensifying the horizontal axis of the project.
One of the highlights of the project is the swimming pool, designed with particular emotional sensitivity to address the safety and accessibility needs of the homeowners’ elderly parents. With its organic spiral shape and natural stone finish, the pool features a continuously curving ramp that allows for smooth and gradual access, promoting comfort, autonomy, and well-being. This thoughtful gesture reinforces the welcoming and emotional character of the home.
In addition to its strong connection with nature, the design incorporates sustainable solutions such as cross ventilation, natural shading, skylights, and the use of high-durability, low-impact materials. The absence of trends and the pursuit of a timeless aesthetic reflect a commitment to longevity and conscious consumption.
