Casa Azul, Guaruja, Brazil
Rodrigo Oliveira played a key role in the landscaping of Casa Azul, a project designed by Studio MK27, located in Guarujá, São Paulo. This residence perfectly balances contemporary architecture with the natural beauty of Brazil’s coastal environment. Oliveira’s landscape design incorporates native plants and sustainable techniques, creating outdoor spaces that not only complement the architecture but also enhance the home’s connection to its surroundings. The landscaping is designed to promote social interaction and quiet contemplation, transforming Casa Azul into a true sanctuary by the sea.
Casa Azul is located in Iporanga, an exclusive region of Guarujá on the São Paulo coast, known for its environmental protection status. The home is nestled within a preserved area of the Atlantic Forest, a critical biome that is both rich in biodiversity and vulnerable to development pressures. Studio MK27’s design for Casa Azul adheres to strict environmental certification guidelines, ensuring that the construction process was focused on preserving the natural landscape. The project showcases how modern architecture can coexist with environmental conservation efforts, setting a benchmark for sustainable design.
One of the standout features of Casa Azul is its minimal intervention in the surrounding landscape. The project was carefully developed within boundaries established by environmental agencies, leaving much of the natural terrain untouched. A two-meter perimeter was established around the house to protect the forest from human activities, preventing unnecessary disruption to the local ecosystem. This careful planning also included reforestation efforts using native plant species, a key challenge for the landscaping team.
The objective of the landscaping project was to create open, uncluttered spaces that seamlessly blend the new vegetation with the existing flora. Over time, this integration will allow the landscape to evolve naturally, enhancing the home’s connection to its environment. In the pool area, Oliveira emphasized the creation of a shaded garden that merges with the surrounding native vegetation, extending beyond the residence and visually linking the home to the nearby sea. The result is a landscape that is both tranquil and environmentally respectful, contributing to Casa Azul’s status as a coastal gem.
