Mahler 1 office building
Design: 3XN GXN

photo : Binyan
Mahler 1 is conceived to engage directly with Mahlerplein, activating the building at eye level and strengthening its relationship with the public realm. Generous green amenities are integrated throughout the offices, while a three-dimensional interplay of façade elements gives the building a distinctive architectural identity.
“With Mahler 1, we aim to create a new Zuidas icon that fosters a social, green and healthy work environment—one that is absolutely worth the daily commute,” says Christian Veddeler, Partner and Head of 3XN’s Amsterdam studio.

Located directly opposite the Cityplot Buiksloterham urban plan, the new building was developed as an integral part of the wider scheme, sharing its ambitions for flexibility, circularity and social sustainability. In 2013 the city of Amsterdam celebrates the 400th anniversary of the famous canal district, an area that was enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010. The Amsterdam-Bijlmermeer housing development, which was erected in the nineteenseventies based on CIAM principles under the direction of Siegfried Nassuth, has been being overhauled since the mid-nineteen-nineties due to a wide range of social and structural problems. In this case, urban renewal means, above all, radically demolishing large-scale, honeycombed housing blocks and replacing them with differentiated, small-scale block development and terraced housing.
