Tussen-ruimte (Between space)
In 2013 the city of Amsterdam celebrates the 400th anniversary of the famous canal district, an area that was enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010. Although this part of the city was characterized by a process of continuous urban an architectural transformation during the centuries, it seems that in recent decades the past seems to get more and more control on its future.
The project Tussen-ruimte (Dutch for Between space) investigates the possibilities for contemporary art and architecture in the canal area in order to keep the process of transformation alive. It does so by opening alleys, hidden courtyards and other unused spaces in the Amsterdam canal area, in collaboration with artist and architects. In total 56 Tussen-ruimten are found in the UNESCO zone, creating a new urban network in this part of the city.
The architectural practice Office Jarrik Ouburg created the first Tussen-ruimte, located in a blind alley in between two canal houses on the Herengracht. The small space is about 10 meters deep, 12 meters high and 80 centimeters wide.
White pebbles cover the existing floor and perforated white curtains are hung from a temporary construction. The curtains vary in length creating a cavity in which one can escape from the busy streetscape and experience the light, wind and sound of the city in a new way.
Tussen-ruimte is a project initiated by Office Jarrik Ouburg, Non-fiction and Taak in collaboration with Castrum Peregrini.
