A Tower
The A Tower will be the only housing high-rise among a number of office high-rises in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, a large-scale business and entertainment district. Infrastructure and wide boulevards dominate the area, which due to the lack of housing is deserted when the commercial facilities close down. Positioned at the Arena Boulevard next to the Arena stadium, the tower will revitalize the surroundings outside working hours.
For the mainly domestic programme the volume is assembled from individual levels shifted out of alignment. These shifted storeys not only define a characteristic contour of the 150m high-rise, they also break the high winds around it. Where the lower tower meets the boulevard the public floors are displaced even more to provide a wind protected entrance situation.
The equally simply layered public programmes include a 15m tall lobby with an art gallery, sports and restaurant facilities, all of which are indicative of the tower’s elegance. The glazed floor of the cantilevered swimming pool 15m above street level offers the most spectacular views out, along with many sight lines to the sports facilities. The shifted outline of the private levels form varied typologies within a fixed layout. Their sizes range from small studios to large six-room apartments. The top levels accommodate seven luxury triplex penthouses, with internal voids and the highest roof terraces in the city.

High-speed elevators bring people either to the public facilities, which also have an independent entrance and circulation, or the their respective apartment floors. The hallway on these levels is extended to the façade to deliver daylight inside and also to give a hint of the view across Amsterdam before the full prospect unfolds in the apartment.
The core of the tower will be poured in situ for stability. A series of stabilizing walls and strategically positioned columns allows for a high percentage of perforation within the lower part of the core to enable transparent entrance conditions. Both columns and floors are prefabricated to keep down costs and construction time.
The smooth glass-and-aluminium surface of the A Tower amplifies the shadow play caused by the changing contours. The texture of the prints on the glazed panels can be observed only when close by. Despite the building’s great height, huge push-slide windows generously open up apartments to the outside.
